Among the forty mares from R. H. McCarter Potter's Pequest Stud at Andover, N. J., which were sacrificed at the annual auction of thoroughbreds here in December, 1909, was Apology (dam of the winners Apologize and Exapo, her only foals to race) by St. Blaise-Athlene, by Pat Malloy. Auctioneer Bain was about to knock her down to a trader for $12 when H. B. Reether, a local tailor and one of those men whose love for the thoroughbred has a sentimental basis, said with some indignation:
"I'll not stand and see a daughter of St. Blaise go for less than $20, and that's my bid." -- DRF "Gossip From The Blue Grass Region", Lexington, KY, August 10, 1912.
