| Owner: 1) Bey of Tunis 2) Thomas Jefferson, President of the United States 1801-1809
The Bey of Tunis sent him in 1806 to Thomas Jefferson, the President of the United States, the Bey's ambassador Melli Melli bringing Black Sultan and two Barb mares, all said to have been selected with great care and expense from the highest bred horses of Tunis. He stood 16 hands and was described as "leggy as a mountain Arab" with superb conformation. After Melli Melli departed both mares were sold for the benefit of the U.S. Treasury. Black Sultan stood his first season with John Tayloe II, going to Elias Earle in South Carolina in 1807, and to John Gallant in 1808
Black Sultan's only significant stud contribution was as sire of Sultana, grandam of gelding Coutre Snapper, which within a few months in the fall of 1823 won around ten 4m heat races, beating the best horses, and was esteemed by many a superior horse to those selected to contend against American Eclipse in the famous North v South match race (Henry was selected as the South's representative)
