Won Epsom Derby, St James's Palace Stakes 3rd 2000 GuineasCaptain Cuttle was a slashing chesnut with a white blaze on his face. A hard puller, he nevertheless had a soppy love for his trainer, whom he was known to follow around like a pet dog. Because of the colt's massive frame, the astute Frederick Darling gave Captain Cuttle the lightest of preparations, running just once in a small race at Doncaster as a two-year-old.
Captain Cuttle sired Scuttle, a Classic winner for King George V, and other good horses including Walter Gay, runner-up in the Derby, before his export to Italy for £50,000 in 1927.
Died in a breeding shed accident in 1932.
