Sold in August 1899 to Lily Langtry for 2,500 guineas (and a cut of the next race he won) and was sent to England to race. The ship S. S. Thermopylae struck a reef off of the Cape of Good Hope shortly before midnight on the night of Sept. 11/12, 1899.
Chesney and another Thoroughbred, Kiora, were washed overboard in their boxes and eventually kicked their way free. Both were later rescued from the surf - Chesney at 9 pm that night, Kiora at 5 am the next morning.
Chesney remained in South Africa, retiring to stud.
