Owned by Sir Ralph Cole, 2nd Baronet, of Brancepeth Castle, Durham; he was a cousin of Sir Ralph Milbanke, owner of Milbanke's Black Mare, ancestress of Highflyer. Cole was the Member of Parliament for the City of Durham between 1678 and 1679.
Cole's Barb has only one recorded progeny, his son [Old] Smithson, sire of an unnamed mare which is the grandam of Hobgoblin, fair class winner between 1729 and 1732
