| Owner: 1) Bashaw of Damascus 2) William Coates Breeder: Sheikh of Acria
He was bred by a Sheikh of Acria who gave him as a foal to the Bashaw of Damascus, who soon after gave him to a Turkey merchant at Aleppo. As a two year old he was purchased by an unidentified "English gentleman". He was "known to be of the purest Arabian breed, in that country, without any mixture of the Turcoman or Barb".
He was imported to England from Syria in 1760, and stood as a thoroughbred sire for William Coates at Smeaton, Yorkshire, for Samuel Tate at Mickleham, Surrey, for John Tuting at Newmarket and finally at Wickham, Essex, with a fee ranging between 2 and 10 guineas.
He was sire of a number of winners including Signal, Flush and Atom,
but his most significant progeny was an unnamed daughter which was the 5th dam of Laurel (1828 Doncaster Cup), Iris (1851 Oaks) and of Charles the Twelfth (1839 St Leger, Doncaster Cup, 1841, 1842 Goodwood Cup)
