Gammy's Girl

Postby Michelle Downs » Wed Sep 27, 2006 12:09 am

 I just wanted to let everyone know that Gammy's Girl had to be put to sleep at 25 years old on Sunday, September 24, 2006 at 10:30 am.
She laid down on the ground and could not get back up and the vet said that her spirit is willing but her old body just wasn't. So the Vet gave her the shot and we burried her in the field that she loved so much. When we can afford to we will get a head stone for her. I just wanted everyone to know.

Postby Michelle Downs » Wed Sep 27, 2006 12:29 am

thank you. She was the mother of "SILENT ANNIE" among alot of others and the descendant of "NASHUA" she no longer could have babies, thats when we got her. When we got her she was so sad so we went and bought a baby for her her spirit returned and for the last couple years all se did was run, eat, and play. Now we are left with a sad 3 year old. So eventually I will have to find another horse for her to have company.

Dear Michelle,

You must miss her very much, but I am sure she had a great time with you.

I Loved her more than I could ever express and I hope that I made her happiest she had ever been. When I took her it was to give her everything that she could ever want. she had so many babies and they were all sold. she miscarried twins 2 months before I got her. so I wanted to have her baby and a comfortable life. She always had feed, round bales-even when the grass was green. I was always afraid that she couldn't get the nutrition she needed if she was always walking and being that old. so I got a new round bale monthly. so I hope that I made her happy. But I did Love her and she is very missed.

I think that what you did for that mare is a wonderful thing. I bet that there is another deserving retiree out there that could be company for your younger horse. It is not always easy to find someone who will care for the elderly, equine or human. I have one 31 year old horse, among my others. It is amazing how the younger ones still respect him. I hope he makes it through this winter, but one of these days I will face the decision that you had to make on Sunday. I am sure that it was not easy. Anyway, I salute you.

Michelle,

Your post has brought tears to my eyes. Gammy was an awesome broodmare and I am so glad that she got to enjoy her final years with someone who loved and cared for her. I was outside looking at one of my senior mares this morning and thinking that I know she doesnt have much time left with me and then to come in and read this just breaks my heart.

Silent Annie is running on Saturday in an allowance and I am sure that she will run in honor of Gammy and make her proud.

So sorry about your loss

Gerry

no it wasn't an easy decision. the vet said that we can give her shots to keep her alive, but she would not get up and we would be making the same decision ina day or two. I did not want her to suffer, she already had a hard enough life. I stayed by her side up until the end and after she had passed I found it really hard to leave her side. she was the best horse that I had ever had. I posted this so other people could remember her in a good way.

She was proud loved to run, she didn't care for baths but would stand there and let you. she hated her feet to be messed with, but if you put a 5 gallon bucket of feed out there, she would let you do anything to her. she could not be riden. So I would take her for walks down the road and run her back up it. I knew if she wanted to she could out run me but she never tried, she stayed at my side.

I want everyone to know that Gammy's Girl was the most loyal and sweet horse and she will be missed everyday. [/img]

I am really not to interested in another older horse my heart broke with Gammy. The only way I would do that is if it was one of Gammy's babies that needed a good home and I could get them here. then yes I would and they would have the best life I possibly could.

When you heart heals a bit there are plenty of young geldings out there who are pasture pets at various rescues/listings. Maybe you can get one or two of those.
