I just wanted to say that I'm about 98% sure Street Sense is homozygous black. COOL!!

It only means that he can't produce chestnut. He can certainly produce bays, browns & blacks.

omg... we agree!

a quick search of all his foals at Keeneland reveals not a single chestnut!

i'm not ready to call him a black (I have seen about 6 true blacks in TBs, and i do not count Halo as black) but I agree that Street Sense can't get any chestnuts

Nah he's brown. That photo does make him look black but the lighting is wrechid. You can see the brown here:

His sire's family is known for being very, very unusually dark browns.

This SON of Offlee Wild certainly appears black though:

Just love the confusion when someones says a horse if a true breeding black.

Are they talking about basecoat? Or Agouti?

A horse can be true breeding black EE, will never have a red foal, or aa, black based E, maybe e (red base coat) but recessive for Agouti, showing the black coat color.

In both case the statement can be true, just depends on what is being described.

Also what's the current thinking about Agouti itself?

AA-bay
?? Wild Bay
At brown
aa black

In particular what color is a horse that is A At, or a At?

It's (in order of dominance):
A+ - Wild Bay
A - Bay
At - Brown
a - Black

An 'A At' would be bay visually. An 'At a' or 'At At' would be brown. Street Sense is 'At_" imo, so if he is not carrying an 'a' he is homozygous brown.

Hey guys, I was just wondering if Medaglia D'Oro is homozygous black. Not a chestnut foal to date in the database, so I just assumed he was. I think there might be a grey in there, but it seems all bay and dark bay pretty much.

Yes he is. So are Tiznow and Bernardini.

And Cherokee Run, Empire Maker, and Dixie Union.

Many TB stallions don't carry the chestnut gene. Though I'm baffled as to how that makes them "homozygous black".

Because they are. They are homozygous for the black allele.
