OCD pellets
Hi Griff,
Did you see the full, 2 page ad in the latest Bloodhorse about one brand of them?
My husband knows both the vet and the farm, supporting them, personally, and they swear by them. If the xrays in the picture are real, it would certainly be worth a shot.

I'm very skeptical without rigorous clinical trials. I have no doubt many horses are greatly improved in x-rays OCDs as well as fractures/chips etc. BUT... is it the "pellets" or the "stall rest" and other treatments i.e bandaging/blistering and other therapies that is responsible for the desired results? I'd like to run a few hundred side-by-side comparisons of horses that receive pellets and those who don't with the same treatment programs or none at all and then assess the "pellets".
From my own experience I've had some outstanding results with such problems and that was without the aid of "pellets". I suspect a good deal of "black box" behind the OCD pellets. Much like weight loss products they ALL work provided you follow the directions of eating less. But it's not the diet pill.... it's simply the fact you are eating less. So is it the "pellets" or is it the stall rest and treatment?.... I lean very strongly to the later.

Hi guys - I did post an anwer to this on another thread - and I have to say again - my boys had x-ray issues in November. I put them on the OCD pellets and by January they were clean! No problems. They were not on stall rest and did not recieve any blistering or other treatment for the x-ray problems. Did the OCD pellets help? Who knows? I do know the x-rays were clean and that's all I cared about. Prior to the OCD pellets they had been on other medications/supplements to take care of those type of problems - and if your x-rays don't clear up I think they offer a money back guarantee after a certain number of days - I figured I didn't have anything to lose
Would I use it again - you bet. I've had my filly on the maintenance dosage. Just my personal experience.

Interesting. Did you give them anything else i.e. Adequan/hylauronic acid etc.? So many people seem to credit something while ignoring other possible reasons for improvement. Maybe the pellets work but I'm skeptical without rigorous clinical trials. Many people thought Cortislim "worked" but the FDA ran them out of the market based on a fraudelent product that did "work"... provided the user ate according to the instructions. Problem was the "pill" didn't do a dang thing but eating less has always worked for dieting.
The boys had lesions and stress fractures and a small beginning of an OCD - no I did not put them on Adequan. They had been on other supplements for joints and conditioning prior during the summer and going into sales prepping. Did the x-rays for the November sales and saw them and decided to pull them out. Had read numerous articles on the OCD pellets and thought we'd give it a shot since it seemed more natural than an injection or blistering. Took x-rays before January 1 and they were clean. Would they have cleared up wthout the OCD pellets. Perhaps. Do I know that for sure? No. I just felt like it worked for us. My hope is to try and get them ready for the sale with as little medications as possible - using supplements versus medications and surgery if possible. Using farrier services over surgery IF possible. Sometimes that plan works and sometimes it doesn't. Probably why our mare was such a loser at the track - the trainer knew she was not to get any steroids or other race-ready medications to make her run better. She either ran on her talent or she didn't - well - she didn't
Had she gotten some medications would she have run better - we'll never know because I wasn't willing to drug her up to see.
I think with all supplements you have to read the information and be either willing to try them or go with what you think is proven - in the long run - you have to do what you think is best for your animals. Just like with humans - we try and use the supplements and vitamins to keep from using "drugs" at our house - sometimes those work and sometimes we have to resort to the drugs - but we'll spend the money on the supplements first.
Had the x-rays not cleared up the decision then would have to have been made - do you put them in sale with x-ray issues or keep them out until September. In our experience - we never should have had them in the January sale anyhow
But again, I'm just basing this on what we've tried and how it worked out. It very may well not work out like this with this next crop of foals, and I will certainly be the first to say that it didn't help then too.
