As I stated above:

This poll addresses subject matter allowed on the forum, not necessarily how to deal with people who post inappropriately.

I would greatly appreciate it if everyone would stick to the issue at hand in this thread.

This thread should have never been allowed...had nothing to do with horses and was made to start a fight.

As I posted above:
Feel free to post comments along with your vote, but please make comments general in nature, and not specific to any individual posters. If you can't comment in a non-confrontational or non-specific way, please just cast your vote and refrain from posting a comment at all.

If you feel that no topic unrelated to horses should ever be allowed on this forum, including topics dealing with forum rules and guidelines, then please post your opinion in that manner. That would, of course, include THIS thread and poll...

Your poll doesn't INCLUDE what I find most offensive...

I would add this choice:

Allow any topic, but disallow, as a permanent rule, behavior that uses foul language to attack either the poster, or the poster's opinion. And name-calling of any kind, shall be grounds for either temporary or permanent bans.

Posts made strictly to embarrass or demean another poster (trolling) should be grounds for immediate temporary vacation. Members who continually fail to get the message, after several vacations (3 strikes?), get permanently banned.

The above is not a violation of free speech, it is a reasonable expectation of reasonable behavior, in order to create an environment that is friendly and comfortable for the majority of posters.

It is easy to ignore a TOPIC one doesn't like or find useful. It is difficult, if not impossible, to ignore someone calling a poster names, using foul language or inferring one is stupid because they have certain opinions, especially when one is the attackee.

I further suggest a specific thread that permanently stays in one topic...i.e., a BAR & GRILL thread...for those who come here only for the amusement of the occasional controversial bar fight, or for those who simply cannot get through a day without partaking in certain destructive (to others) behavior. For the BAR & GRILL...I would have the only rule be that only voluntary PARTICIPANTS can be the subject or target of such behavior, and not anyone who does not choose to participate in such a thread.

That would make less work for the Moderator, and the rules would be easy to follow and enforce equitibly, IMO. It works in most businesses..It should work here, as well.

PS...The term "Adult" should stand for something other than "over the age of consent". Because with the age of consent, comes accountability for, and self-control of, one's behavior.

I voted for the second option, but I'd add a codicil to that. I would say that if a mod has to take the time and effort to edit a post back into line, then a warning should be PM'd to the perpetrator. The mods/admin could decide how many warnings might merit a temporary or permanent ban.

Just my two cents.

NO ONE has a constitutional right to go through life unoffended.

If your (collective) only real objection to someone's post is the language they used, too damn bad. If you (collective) want to be sheltered, get off the internet and stay away from humans. If you (collective) can't handle someone telling you they think you/your ideas are BS, oh well.

Life isn't like grade school and there are no hall monitors. You (collective) have no more right to tell someone to tone down their responses than they have to tell you to get a thicker skin. The only one who should be allowed to tell someone how to curb their posts is the moderator.

BJ wrote:Posts made strictly to embarrass or demean another poster (trolling) should be grounds for immediate temporary vacation.

This would have to apply to indirect, not-so-subtle insults as well. Some people excel at those just like some excel at the direct, in-your-face insult. Frankly, if you (collective) can't handle a little embarrassment, see above comment about going through life unoffended. Fact is most times people do a far better job of embarrassing themselves than anyone can do for them. People look like an ass because they do or say something stupid -- not because someone else has pointed out their stupidity.

BJ wrote:The above is not a violation of free speech

It wouldn't matter if it was since this is not a free speech issue. This is a PRIVATELY OWNED AND OPERATED MESSAGE BOARD. NO ONE has a right to post here and the free speech amendment does not apply. If Miles decided tomorrow the only people allowed to post here would be lesbian porn stars running for mayor, he's allowed to do that.

BJ wrote:It is difficult, if not impossible, to ignore someone calling a poster names, using foul language or inferring one is stupid because they have certain opinions, especially when one is the attackee.

That is one viewpoint. I ignore stupid people saying stupid crap all the time. Personally, I find it easier to ignore the above than a hot thread ('hot' in this case meaning a thread with multiple posts in quick succession), but then I don't give a damn what someone says about me and I'm not driven to get the last word in a discussion or feel the need to respond to every single post made. If someone 'attacks me', I respond if I feel like it warrants a response. *I* don't go after anyone first -- that's how I keep my ass from getting bounced. I wait for people to come at me and go from there.

If someone is really that offended by the tone of this place, LEAVE! No one holds a gun to your (collective) head and forces you to come here and no one puts a gun to your head and says you (collective) have to post.

I'm sorry Sam...where did anyone say it was a constitutional right to go through life unoffended?

As for the rest of your post. Sorry...not interested.

Fine, does "NO ONE has a right to go through life unoffended" make it easier for you to understand the point being made, BJ?

You're advocating certain language and posts be disallowed because you find them objectionable for whatever reason -- you're offended by them either because they imply or directly say you are stupid or because you are just offended by the blue language (note, don't ever read Hemingway if you can't stand blue language) or because of some other reason known only to yourself.

I have one mom, I don't need a few dozen others trying to police my language or opinion. If you (collective) can't handle how I state my opinion, sucks to be you. Stop focusing on how someone says something and start paying attention to the message being sent.

Additionally, I'm always amused by the fact that those who advocate for more stringent censorship on message boards are the ones who seem to lack self-control. They are incapable of ignoring and not responding to the people they don't like, even it it's only to tell them they aren't reading their posts.

You've (collective) no more right to say someone can't tell you they think you are an idiot than they have to tell you to grow a thicker skin. No one makes anyone look stupid, people do it to themselves by saying or doing stupid things. The rest of us just point and laugh.

My vote is "Other."

I thought you were ignoring me, Winnie.

The funny thing is you actually believe you'd be immune from any such poll. Trust me, sweetheart, you'd be amoung the first 4 on just about everyone's list. The only thing you are doing by continuing this charade is insulting the intelligence of everyone here because you think we are stupid enough to not know who you are.

AS for my 'offensive signature'... that just goes to show how little you are aware of life outside your own little sphere. IF you had any awareness, you'd know that exact line is the genesis of a free speech case currently before the Supreme Court.

edited for typos... damnit, I can spell, I just can't type.
