Creative Names For Our Colt

Postby Shadowrun » Tue Apr 24, 2007 8:22 am

Our foal is on the ground and is a nice size, healthy baby with lots of chrome. He looks like he will be a blood bay rather than dark bay. Very nice sensible temperament and quite a sweety. He was bred for the commercial market.

We WILL name our foal before he goes to a sale, so I thought I would see what the forum can come up with. He is by Indian OceanXClassy Henbane.

My favorite name "Red Tide" is already taken. I have some others in mind but would like to see someone else's ideas. :)

Thanks for any input.

INDIA PALE ALE

Henbane (the herb) was until the mid-1500s used to preserve beer. Afterwards it was replaced by hops under German law. Some time later, the British East India Company developed a beer that would survive the 5 month sea journey across the Indian Ocean and Bay of Bengal without spoiling. This heavily-hopped beverage is no longer brewed in India in any large quantities, but is quite popular in the US.

Continuing on the theme of India and beer:

PIED KINGFISHER

The name of the most commonly known Indian beer, Kingfisher, is permanently reserved so the Pied Kingfisher is a species indigeneous to India.

Gosh. The Red Tide is a severely poisonous algal bloom that appears infrequently, destroying all of the sea life.

You could always call him Jack the Ripper.. :D Just kidding.

How about Ocean Classic?

Madelyn, red tides aren't actually all that bad...in a lot of places of the world harmful algal blooms (of which red tides are but one type) happen at least once and usually 3-4 times a year. They do cause localized death by hypoxia of the critters that can't swim out of the way, but they rarely cause massive wipeouts in any given area.

People die during red tides when they eat shellfish that have fed off the red algae. The toxin in the algae is harmless to the mussels but causes paralysis in people.

Another take on class and India:

STARBOARD HOME.

Ships sailing from England to India would sell passage. The best cabins were the ones with a view of the land (and, legend has it, trade winds)...port side on the way out, starboard on the way home. It was abbreviated as POSH.

I spent a day on Sanibel Island in Florida in March, and the red tide had me and everyone else on the fishing pier coughing like the plague.

No long-term effects, that I know of!

Wow, there is some really good imagery in this thread! I especially liked some of Ill-bred's ideas.

I wondered if my name was too obscure. I wanted a play on the mare and sire names ie ocean/stormy/poison = Red Tide (also a bit of a looming threat in a race). LOL

Anyway, I am not wedded to Henbane but wanted some kind of theme along the lines of dad and mom.

Thanks so much for all your input thus far. I am keeping some of these for consideration. Ocean Classic is a keeper, too. :D
