The Big 3 in Top Stallions

Postby dumont84 » Mon Apr 30, 2007 6:17 pm

In the last 53 years the Top studs have had these 3 stallions in their 1st 6 generations. These stallions are BLENHEIM II, DISCOVERY, and NEARCO.

Here are the 6 TOP STUDS:
A.P.INDY
BOLD RULER
DANEHILL
MR. PROSPECTOR
NORTHERN DANCER
STORM CAT

There are others I know, but it is interesting that these 6 have the big 3 in their 1st 6 generations. Notice how A.P. Indy and Storm Cat have the 3 on both sides of their pedigrees.

As in any other "discoveries" like this the question is (we know, there is a thread, that is filled for 54 pages with this kind of "stuff" by now):

Is this trait something unique for this small group of horses and may be a key of success or is it just representativ for the population and so something quite ordinary not worth mentioning?

Some 18 months ago we made a quiz on a German tb-forum concerning the question: who was the last mare in German tb-breeding free from Nearco.

Incidently the youngest mare we found was born in 1998. Of course, she was bred to sires having Nearco in their ped - and there is no sire in GER now, who is free from Nearco - Surumu should have been the last one.

So having Nearco in a pedigree must be quite normal today to any thoroughbred. What is much more interesting: are there horses without him in the ancestry.

I like to see some Hyperion/Gainsborough blood added to the mix.

Edit: and also some Teddy...

Reputed Testamony stands in NC and is free from Nearco I believe. Of course, I don't believe he attracts any breeders from the race world.

I guess all your German stallions have Discovery and Blenheim II in their first 6 generations also.

After researching Tesio's mares and stallions its no wonder Tesio accomplished in his lifetime what many middle of the road breeders dream of doing.

Tesio should have raced his Tb more in France and England as his competition in Italy was sub par. Long live the legend of Nearco, one of the all time greats.

Parlo, This is definately not ordinary or representative of the population here in the USA as I checked the top 2007 Leading Sires from the April 28th edition of the Bloodhorse and found that of the top 15 Sires only 4 had Blenheim II, Discovery and Nearco in their 1st 6 generations. #1 A.P. Indy, #2 Royal Academy, #5 Smart Strike and # 11 Langfuhr.
So Parlo, don't down things you don't know anything about. Check things out before opening your mouth. O.K.

Louis...isn't it because of Nearco that so many pesky strands of Phalaris now exist? Think how sound today's TB would be if Nearco were never born to pass along those dreaded Phalaris strains!

@dumont84: There is no reason to outcry - I just intended to precise your statement, what you have thankfully done. For example: as you will know, any living tb has the alleged X-factor-heart-line tracing to Pocahontas at least once - so you can't discover "large hearts" just by pedigree-research. And this is the problem with all "discoveries" based on names in peds and not proofed by genetic marker: the more you trace back the more likely you'll find those you want to find and declare as sources of special traits. But this ability to interpret makes a great "pedigree-researcher" - although this is more like doing horoscopes!

Off course, having Nearco in a 6-gen-ped is not worth mentioning.

On your advise I searched for 10 important active sires in/from GER. I found this:

Imported sires like Big Shuffle, Dashing Blade, Black Sam Bellamy and Goofalik fill your requirement - they all have the 3 sires you mentioned within 6 generations.

Nearco and Blenheim but no Discovery are to be found in home-breds Lomitas, Platini, Tiger Hill and imported Second Set.

Lando and Monsun (both homebred - and perhaps the best of this group of ten? :D ) just carry Nearco.

Discovery is comparatively rare here. Blenheim's influence is much more via Donatello and Nasrullah than via Mahmoud, who was early exported to the US.

@Rokeby Forever:   Well, there is some Sickle by Phalaris in the US, but in Europe: Nearco, Fairway, Pharos.

@Louis: Tesio knew quite well, why he didn't race his horses more often in France / GB. Besides the great problem of transportation in his times - Tenerani is supposed to be the first horse sent to races to GB via plane - he knew how strong competition was there. As he could beat his compatriote owner-breeders on home-tracks, he didn't intend to make himself a fool to them, who envied him, by being beaten abroad. And: isn't Tesio's success probably much more due to his ruthless training-methods than his alleged breeding-genius?

http://www.pedigreequery.com/arctic+tern

Arctic Tern had Discovery twice, Blenheim once but no Nearco or I must have overlooked.

His son Bering adds Nearco though: http://www.pedigreequery.com/bering
And gives some more linebreeding to other important horses.
