Affirmed was the best horse since Man O'War. No horse faced the competition he did over 3 seasons...Alydar was world class (faced him 9 or 10 times), Seattle Slew was in a class of his own and Cauthen blew the ride that day, and Spectacular Bid did nothing but break world records after Affirmed beat him in the JCGC. Who else in the history of racing ran against three horses of that caliber?

After winning the Triple Crown on Affirmed, Cauthen was injured in a spill and was never the same rider again. When he returned to racing after the accident he was sadly pathetic and didn't win until his 84th mount. His 4 rides on Affirmed during this stretch were pretty awful.
Affirmed raced against Alydar 10 times, finished ahead of him 8 times (DQ'd in the Travers). He faced Seattle Slew twice and a poor ride and slipped saddle left everyone thinking of what could have been. He ran against Spectacular Bid once (Affirmed was older and probably fresher).
That's 13 races against horses not only in the Blood Horse All-Time Top 100 but they were all in the top 29. You're correct, no horse ever faced the competition that Affirmed did and his crop of 3yos was one of the strongest ever; Affirmed, Alydar, Nasty And Bold (crushed good older horses including Cox's Ridge on July 4th of his 3yo year in the Brooklyn H), Believe It, Star De Naskra (became Sprint Champ after he stopped racing against Affirmed and Alydar) and Sensitive Prince.
Laffit Pincay finished first in all 10 races that he rode him (including the Travers DQ).

It's a wonderful picture and he looks every bit a champ to me, Pete. No complaints with the clarity, either...good job, Picasso! (Well, if Picasso were a photographer....)
Alydar was a MONSTER. If you ever watch a replay of Alydar's Florida Derby, Bluegrass Stakes, or Whitney Stakes, you ask yourself, "How in the world could a horse beat Alydar 8 out of 10 times? Alydar was so good that he lost to Affirmed four times before the KY Derby and was still favored over Affirmed in the race...can you believe it? (Poor Believe It that year, no pun intended!) I think in 95% or more of crop years, Alydar would have won the Triple Crown without even breathing hard.
In Marlboro Cup, Cauthen did let Slew have a clear lead in :47, but in retrospect, I don't think it mattered...Slew was a year older at the time and was a running machine that day. On the day the saddle slipped, Affirmed wasn't beaten all that badly, Pete. Like you ask, "What could have been?" (Direct quote this time - feel better now?)
Don't make any excuses for The Bid in the JCGC - he was less than a length behind Affirmed at the head of the stretch and Affirmed opened on The Bid under a strong hand ride - The Bid was 100% full out and wasn't going to gain an inch...and that was that.
Not too many past Derby winners are known as "turf sires," but Affirmed earned that label. I sometimes wonder if it would have been worth entering Affirmed on the grass at some point...maybe the Euros would have had more of an interest in him as a stallion - I have no doubt that Affirmed would have been every bit as good on the turf.
Sorry for rambling...Affirmed is a "special" horse to me. People call Street Sense "Special." Well, Afffimed would have stopped off for a hotdog and still would have beaten Street Sense.
Thanks again for sharing this pic, Pete. Ever since Affirmed died, I've hoped that up in Horsey Heaven, Affirmed got a chance to sneak up behind Ruffian when she wasn't looking. LOL! And I hope the NYRA dies a slow, painful death for never naming a race after Affirmed.

Affirmed brings back many cherished memories for me. I was given his shoes by his groom Juan. I loved to go to their barn nice people and Laz Barrera was my good friend as he loved bloodlines like me.
When Affirmed was in the paddock before the SA Handicap, he didnt turn a hair calm like the champion he was. Nothing disturbed him
After Affirmed's 2 year old campaign, Laz shipped to Calif. to winter and when I 1st saw Affirmed he was real frail and thin, after he was rested Affirmed put back on his weight and filled out to become a different looking horse.
Larry Barrera Laz's son is writing Laz's life story in book form. To Affirmed and Laz, I miss you both, thanks for the memories, Your friend Louis.

Roke, we kid each other and have great fun with each other on this forum, but, seriously, Affirmed was a much better racehorse than most gave him credit and had to been the ulitmate Rodney Dangerfield in the breeding shed. At one time you could breed to him for $15K. And Alydar was $250K. I agree totally with you, Affirmed was as great as Man o War. IMHO!
