Recently bought filly from track

Postby ArchDandy » Tue Jun 05, 2007 2:30 pm

I just bought the filly "Media Luna" by Dominated Debut. She ran ten times mostly at Los Alamitos Racecourse, and never placed. I purchased her as a pleasure and possibly a show horse later on. I am wondering though, if she would have even the smallest value as a broodmare, obviously not for sales, but is there a stallion in CA that later on might improve a foal out of her? Her jockey stated that she simply didnt try, and there seems to be nothing amiss on her conformation. Unfortunately the closest I have to a conformation shot is her in this pic stuffing her face at home.

Actually, there aren't many racehorses in her family under the third dam. I think you could find better broodmare prospects...

You bought this horse for the right purpose. Don't breed her.

I agree with Madelyn and tbrace. I would just enjoy her as a riding horse ;)

ArchDandy.......what distances did she race??? She has the dosage profile of a horse that wouldn't get warm until she got over a mile and a half!!!

Hi

Cryptic Ninja asks a good question. She should have been routing...the farther the better. This filly is very stoutly bred. She is a half sibling to Sorry To Tell You (22-3-2-6 ($64,974) who won on the dirt and turf, both sprinting and routing. Media Luna's dam, Erinova, had a record of 53-5-5-8 , and earnings of $106,345, and was best routing. The next dam, Malakova was a half sibling to 5 winners (one stakes placed), and the next dam, Indiscrete Miss, was a half sibling to 2 stakes winners, and 1 stakes placed winner. This is the immediate family that produced Sensitive Music who stood at stud here in Washington state years ago.
I have seen a lot of mares bred much worse than this one.

If I remember correctly, she never did anything more than 6 furlongs, did a few 32 claimers at first, never placed, then some cheaper, til she was down to 2,500 claimers, still not placing, and no distance. I also thought with her pedigree she might be a late bloomer and might like some more distance as well, good to hear that from others. Editing to add her last race was like 4f...

ArchDandy - There may be any number of reasons why your filly's prior owners/trainers chose to run her short and on the dirt but a review of her female family alone would have argued for giving this girl a shot on turf - turf with some cut to it - and at a classic distance, before retiring her - IF SHE's SOUND TO RACE??????

Take alook at this week's Bloodhorse, page 3720 under "FOREIGN STAKES" - SOLDIER OF FORTUNE - a colt out of an ERIN's ISLE mare (ERIN's ISLE/BUSTED/CREPELLO over a LORD GAYLE/SIR GAYLORD mare) won the G-1 Budweiser Irish Derby July 1st. That's a 12 furlong race on The Curragh course which for this race was rated soft to heavy and this win brought his total lifetime earnings to over $1MM. You'll also find ERIN's ISLE's broodmare stats in there.

Now SOLDIER OF FORTUNE is out of an ERIN's ISLE mare that herself has now produced two GSW (NOTE: Both sired by Galileo (Sadler's Wells/Northern Dancer over a Miswaki/Mr. Prospector mare) so SOLDIER OF FORTUNE is a full to G-3 multiple stakes winner, HELIOSTATIC. For a 1998 vintage mare that was a G-3SP winner and has had 3 foals to date that's not too bad a record. SOLDIER OF FORTUNE's 2nd dam was no slouch either.

I'm not trying to say that just because your mare shares the same broodmare sire as SOLDIER OF FORTUNE and HELIOSTATIC that you should necessarily get excited but I do think this mare might be deserving of a little more research into her pedigree. By the way in his book "Thoroughbred Stallions", Tony Morris gives ERIN's ISLE mention in a write-up about his sire BUSTED. Apparently ERIN's ISLE actually came into his own racing in California. You really ought to read that and see what else you can find out about this mare's pedigree influences. IF you can't locate a copy PM me with your address and I'll send you a copy of it. BUSTED was remarkable for more than producing well tempered stayers on soft turf that got better with years/experience: in the winter he would carry a thick noticabally curly coat, as did his sire, CREPELLO. In the photo in the book he looks like an equine water spaniel, I forget which kind: Irish or Portugese that has that distinctive tightly curled coat.

It would be interesting to find out more about this stallion and more importantly finding out more about this mare's pedigree overall. I'm thinking there was some reason your mare - with this pedigree was always run so short and on dirt, but if you have her vet checked and she is still more or less race fit/conditioned to run - doesn't have a chip or airway issue - you might just want to see how she takes to the grass or even the hurdles...that is IF you're inclined to become a racehosre owner....as opposed to pleasure rider. Since you say there's nothing wrong with her conformation and in the photo her legs look very tight and clean I'm inclined to wonder - as another poster above did: What in the world was she doing racing at Los Al????? The races this filly was in would have been over about the time she got in gear to run her race - so of course it felt like she didn't try.....she should have been raced REALLY long and on turf.

Seriously though her female family history's isn't stellar, as has been pointed out above - it's not totally devoid of BT winners, but this is a case of what a female family produces simply not being fashionalbe when considering whether or not to breed her to produce a racehorse. IF you decide to go that route I'd spend some time looking at what worked with BUSTED and ERIN's ISLE, her female family in detail and more than just the 3 gens back with the idea of breeding to produce a grass runner who might have some accelleration injected by the sire.

Interesting pedigree to but possibally only as a curiosity.

After reading all the posts, and not checking her pedigree as of yet. I'd have to agree with checking into her pedigree more.

I worked with a filly named Torelia who also didn't try in her races. I tried to run her on the grass at Laurel, but of course they took the race off the turf. Her owner, my boss said after the race to just turn her out with the mares. We bred her and low and behold she produced 2 stake horses, both by Majesty's Prince and both were turf horses.

If she is bred for distance, then they did her an injustice running her short.

This filly has turned out to be one of the most amazing horses Ive ever been near. I cant afford to take her back to the track, and she doesnt care for anything that doesnt involve food or galloping... Im consideing taking her to Redattore next year. I saw comments about finding a durable stallion and he won most of his races at 8 years old it seems, that sounds like durability and longevity to me.

Editing to include that I chose him over another stallion because his conformation suited better, she has straight shoulders and he has sloping....etc

Arch, may I ask who her last owner/trainer was? PM it to me if you don't want to say publicly.
