Do the Math!!

Hi Guys,

Math was never my long suit!! How long in furlongs is a 1 and 1/8 on the turf? :oops:

Good Question! My mare Here's Suds (OTTB) was supposed to have been a distance runner in FLA. I had access to a 4 furlong turf track (out hidden inthe woods with a little golf course in the middle of it) on the farm I bought her from which I used to work her on and after two laps she was just getting going. I had always imagined a furlong was a 1/16th of a mile, but that was my imagination! (I might have been told that 4 laps of this track was a mile, but I could be making that up, now).

So that means a furlong is an eight of a mile, and my little 4 furlong track was half a mile. I'm glad to know this. Now I can "feel" her ride.

And if she was just getting ready to put on some speed after two laps, then she was getting ready for the burst at the end of the mile to finish, just like she was trained to do. What a good little mare.

Well, not little. 17 hands, actually. She'd do that drop into a stretched out floating power thing just at the end to pull in front of my girlfriend's OTTB at the end.

We were nuts. We were kids. I can't believe we didn't kill oursleves, or our horses. But they loved it. And I have to say, we did condition them for it. I wouldn't go there with, ask that of, a retired horse like that today.

1 mile = 8 furlongs
8 f = 10 chains
1 chain = 22 yards
1 mile = 1760 yards

ain't imperial measurement great :lol:

See Sam's post entitled "Bugger!" -- it has something to do with the number of times you have posted. I guess I'm an early-greying weanling! :o

I think that comes under "roaning patterns" Madelyn....... :D :D :D

gosh, I'm thrilled to be a yearling.... no hurry to break maiden here, is there? Not like KY, just so many tries and you can't race anymore...
