tough/rogue/savage stallions

Postby kezeli » Fri Sep 14, 2007 7:27 am

Hi all, I'm gonna start this again.....Famous/infamous rogue stallions out their. Someone said there is a book with alot of the details on how these guys are/have been delt with. I have always been interested in this as when I was a groom I seemed to always get the nuts and liked it that way!! Atleast the boys (and some girls) I got were or rather seemed to be just smarter than average and just knew they were bigger than us and needed special treatment to respond well. Anyway could someone point me back to these books?

In Capote's recent obituary, his groom said he was temperamental. Another one was Ribot (once he got to the USA). Some include:

Capote
Ribot
Nasrullah

I was told that Touch Gold's nickname was Jeffrey Dahmer by a groom.
Congaree "hated to be groomed"

Conversely, Alphabet Soup was quiet as a pony and we pet him.
Skip Away also had a good rapport with his handlers, very playful.

Dynaformer has a reputation as being something of a carnivore.

And Roberto and his offspring, as well as the Storm Cats, are notorious.

When I visited Three Chimneys last fall, I was warned not to get too close to the fence of Capote's paddock because he was quite territorial and would defend his turf -- and he did parallel my progress up and down the fence line, making sure that I did not intrude one inch on his turf. I didn't need that warning for Dynaformer (whose reputation had preceded him) but probably wouldn't have needed it: he just had the look of "I'm the dominant stud here and don't you dare mess with me" written all over him.

Festival of Light was so savage he was gelded after one (maybe two) seasons at stud.

Corslew attacked his groom and owner and was euthanized shortly after.

Drone was vicious. I have heard (but don't if this is true or not) that when he was bred he had a muzzle on and two handlers...and there was a way to get the mare away from him quickly.

Spinning World and Silver Ghost are rarely seen without their muzzles on.

Sir Tristram in New Zealand was a mean ol' SOB who would have nothing to do with northern hemisphere-bred mares. His muzzle and check gear are on display at Cambridge Stud where he stood until his death.

Silver Ghost is a monster, he does come out with a muzzle on. We have a yearling by him and he is not mean but can be very confrontational, I'm SOOOO glad he is being sent out to break!!!!

Anyone esle see that picture of Dynaformer being walked by a groom with a helmet on (maybe even 2 with helmets, can't remember), the horse himself fat, with a muzzle on and hooves that looked in dire need of a trim?
A picture speaks volumes.

Corslew was the worst one, lately, I think. This son of Seattle Slew was moved out of his previous farm because of his viciousness, and went to Victory Rose Thoroughbreds in Vacaville, CA. He had just finished breeding a mare and was being led back to his paddock when he went berserk. He knocked down Ellen Jackson, put his knees on her back, and proceeded to bite the crap out of her. Thank God there was a brave girl nearby who beat him off with a shank. Ellen went to the hospital with broken ribs and a few chunks out of her. After consultation with the owners, Corslew was euthanized that night.

There was a stud here in Indiana that seriously injured his owner's wife. His name was Aly T, and apparently another stallion (Dafuskie Pirate) rescued the owner by distracting Aly T. Aly T was put down.

Halo was known to be a tempermental sort too. I saw him in MD and he too had a muzzle on until he was put in his stall. They said it took 2 men to catch him in the mornings. But I heard that when he moved to KY he was fine to work with...........go figure.

I know folks like stallions with fire, but to me, a vicious stallion is an accident waiting to happen. When it looks like the stud and handlers are going to war when it's time for the breeding shed, good gravy!

Of course mares and geldings can be vicious too...

At least with a stallion you are reminded everytime you get near him you have to watch out, but a nasty mare............. oh, she'll get you every time. She pretends to be nice until you've let your guard down and then she nails you. shudder..........

I've always found it interesting that Three Chimmneys rides their stallions. It makes sense to me that this would make for better-adjusted stallions. Dynaformer has a rep for being evil, though--anyone one know if they ride him? I don't know much about him, so he may be too lame, etc, and now he's pretty aged. What about their other stallions?
