Breakdowns at Belmont

Postby Indychase » Thu Sep 13, 2007 1:36 pm

What has happened to Big Sandy? Opening week has been ugly.

Two euthanzied today, including Unrestricted, an A.P. Indy-Compsure colt and Gruffles, a Mr. Greeley-Darby Shuffle colt, Tiz Wonderful suffers a life threatening injury, Find a Chestnut broke down badly on opening day.

So much for it being so supremely safe.

Well, I posted earlier but went back and read the BH article.

One horse had 2 starts and one 3...Yikes. Very sad. :-(

Tiz Wonderful was a train wreck waiting to happen...look how Asmussen managed his comeback.

Gruffles is a Pletcher trainee - another goes to the cemetery. In that race, Allen Jerkens' horse won - his horses just don't break down, do they?

I'm not a Pletcher fan, far from it, but I can't see blaming him for Gruffles. From what I read at bloodhorse.com, Unrestricted broke down and Gruffles couldn't avoid tripping over him, breaking his own leg in the process.

In our country, if they shut the tracks down because a horse broke down, we would have to come to your country to run.

Do not get me wrong.
1e Breakdown is not a problem
2nd Breakdown someone is raising his eyebrows
3rd Breakdown newspapers are asking questions and the public are questioning
4th It is a becoming a political problem, questions will be there for our prime minister stating animal care etc abuse of animals.

So if you send horses over here, send only the sound ones with 100% good x rays and 100% scans, without medical stuff, hormones etc overhere.

But yet over here is not a single purse left so get them horses other things to do.

What's up with the NY gate crew? Bobby Duncan got the boot after constantly screwing up Saratoga starts and the staff is now worse than ever - all day today, they had trouble loading horses.

The Green Monkey's race had only six horses and it took them 4 minutes to load them.

electric light has 3 crosses of Native dancer and 2 crosses of the foundation Mare Almahmoud, when I did a search on the family of Almahmoud, I found a surplus of un- soundness in her background.

If the industry would give a bone density test to these thoroughbreds that have sustained career ending injuries and breakdowns there would be much to learn. As there our families that when bred together will produce a higher rate of thoroughbreds that will have just a few lifetime starts before they go down to injury.
