Tattoo research

Postby lovethehorsies » Mon Dec 27, 2004 8:59 pm

I volunteer at a non profit horse rescue. We got a thoroughbred in with a tattoo. Is there a relatively inexpensive way to research his tattoo number?

You could e-mail the Jockey Club the number and see if someone there can research it for you.

I haven's seen him yet. All I know is he is a gelding of unknown age. There are only five numbers in the tattoo but no letter. What does this mean? (Please pardon my ignorance.)

The letter represents the year they were born.If it is not there than either it has worn off or removed. The JC should still be able to help you out with the remaining nubers.

There is always a letter at the front if it is a Thoroughbred -- not so for a Standardbred. The letter could be faded or look like a number. But anyhow, it represents the year of birth. Five characters are enough, six are more usual. One clue is to figure out how old the horse is (ie: teeth) and then figure what letters could correspond. So if he has a discernible hook, say, seven or eleven, then the letter could be A (7) or W(11). 1996 was the letter Z. If you can read the tattoo, the JC will look it up for you. Last time I did it, it cost $35. Good luck.
