I am looking for a trainer/owner named Melvin (Mel) Widenmaier, who is the last owner/trainer of record for a gelding named War Medal. I have left a message for him at Woodbine but I did so twice and have yet to hear back from him. He was supposedly trying to sell War Medal a month or so ago and I am trying to insure the horse is okay and find out if he still needs a home. (Sentimental interest...his Dam, Warning Zone, holds a special place in my heart.)

I am told via his previous trainer that Melvin W. may have gone to Thistle Downs and taken War Medal with him.

If anyone has any info on how to contact Melvin Widenmaier directly, please send me a PM.

Any info will be greatly appreciated. Thanks.
BJ

If you post this on the COTH board, there are quite a few canadians, on that board. Try it on the "General" section, maybe, and the a'racing" section?

Hi BJ: I know a couple trainers at Fort Erie who sometimes go to Woodbine as well and will ask them to ask around. Hopefully I can find out something for you. Regards, Claire

Hey BJ

You could always go to the Daily Racing Form Web site open a free account and then put that trainer on your trainer watch. It will then send you an e-mail the next time that trainer has a horse in.

I Know Mel , he lives 15 miles from Fort Erie in Port Colbourne.Go to Equibase.com and establish a virtual stable for free , enter the horses name and yoy will be notified when and where the horse is entered to run.

Try calling Thistledown and asking for the stable gate:

(216) 662- 8600

The track is closing Dec. 31 for the winter. See if you can have him paged when you call. Good luck.

I've tried posting this a couple of times. Hope it works this time.

Thanks to all who have extended their help...most especially BriarHalo, Jenarby, Wendy (WolfrunFarm), Supernova, K~2, et al...War Medal has been found safe and sound in Ontario, Canada in the care of Mel Widenmaier.

I am proud to announce we (my partner and I) have purchased him and he will be staying with Mel (at least through the winter). Right about now he should be enjoying his new, warm, Gladiator blanket we sent him. I can't wait to meet him...to feed him carrots and spoil him as we do the fillies.

I have met so many wonderful people in my search for War Medal. Thank you soooooooo much for helping!

For those of you who don't know, War Medal's dam, Warning Zone was the first thoroughbred I ever got close to. My quest to find Warning Zone after we bought our first horse (a filly), sadly ended with the information that she had died in 1999 shortly after foaling War Medal. I started tracking her foals and became concerned about War Medal when he began dropping in claiming levels and running badly even at the lowest levels.

Thankfully he was still in kind hands but he was up for sale and the odds were not looking good that he would not end up as just another sad statistic or at the very least I might have totally lost track of him and never found him.

Here are some pics of him and his dam:

BJ,

I'm so happy you found him. Where is he exactly in Ontario (private message me if you would like).
