Interesting Keeneland Hips

There are plenty of high end, big dollar mares for sale, but anybody notice some that are quality pedigrees and won't break the bank! As I've mentioned, I've raced for a few years and am considering starting to breed on a small scale.. It would be breed to race. I love reading all the comments on pedigree, as it is fascinating to me. I've reread the past few years Keeneland and Adena catalogs (great breedback option) and feel I can get a quality (not superstar) mare...5-10 years old....some pedigree.... raced successfully....in foal to a quality race stallion for somewhere in the neighborhood of $25k. Any hips fit that bill!!!!

How about #1987 as an example....any comments would be appreciated!

I'm in a similiar situation to Matt. With the exception that I think I may like to sell a couple (hopefully privately to PA trainers) before I keep any to race myself.
Any thoughts on this sale - particularly books 4-7

#269 "does it" for me. Although she doesn't meet Matts criteria, I'm curious to see what she goes for. I would love to see her go to Touch Gold.

I LOVE the pedigree on 189 (Silver Charm x Miraloma) I/F to Seeking the Gold...... I think she could slip through because of Silver Charm.

Matt - I was told years ago that many will sell broodmares when they are 10 for financial reasons (depreciation) so that's when you'll see the prices come down a bit.

Both will be interesting to watch. I'll tell you, Silver Charm is one I'll never figure out. I loved to watch him race, and I thought he was going to be a dynamite sire. Have to figure he got nice mares initially. Tricky game!

Hip #1987 will come down a bit in price due to her age and the fact that she has yet to produce any blacktype--two winners from three to race though, and several nicely bred offspring coming along. But considering that she's in foal to Successful Appeal who stood for $40,000 in 2007, I think it's pretty unlikely that she will be let go for $25,000.

Miraloma has been pretty much of a failure as a producer, but the fact that this filly is in foal to Seeking the Gold (125K stud fee) probably rules her out as a bargain.

Thanks LB..... I'm trying to come up with a list of about 20 mares that fit my parameters. Obviously, the toughest part is handicapping how strong the sale will be. I'd love to have that particular mare for $25k, but as you mention it may be a long shot. That said.....sometimes when I read through the previous results, I'm shocked at the prices some solid mares go for. That's why I'm going to stick to a dollar level, and see what falls to me. I think breeding to race will open the field up to me more than a breed to sell strategy would. We'll see!

You're very right to think that at every sale there are mares that fall through the cracks. Do plenty of homework, and then be prepared to sit in the pavillion forever. That's the way I've "gotten lucky" in the past.

One thing about checking the results--often a mare is listed "in foal" in the catalogue but when she goes through the ring, she has lost the pregnancy in the meantime. That is, of course, announced at the time of sale, but it doesn't show up in the results. Which is why some of the mares that look like such steals, really aren't.

Sometimes mares go that "slip through" aren't really because whoever let them go for that little knew something we didn't. There was one in a sale a few years ago with a blue-blood pedigree, but her first two foals were so hideous that the owners wanted to get rid of her before the word got out. Well, the word did get out, because she didn't sell well, I want to say it was around $30K.

I doubt if any of the first 200 hips go for $25,000 or less. I would be looking a little later in the sale.

So - say you have 30k and 3 days to spend at the Nov sale.
And you want to buy 1, maybe 2.
Do you even bother showing up until Wed of the 2nd week?

There is always the possibility of getting a mare for 30k earlier. Some always will fall through the cracks. Look at the Keenland Yearling Sale, though since I wasn't there and didn't see the yearlings, I don't know what conformational faults they had. But, Maven has said, if you do your homework, you can get something nice at a reasonable price.

Your chances of finding one at that price probably is good with Book 3,4 and 5. At least one really worth that money. I've glanced through books 4 and 5 already and found some that are nice that I don't think will go for more than that. I haven't looked at book 3 yet. Will tomorrow.
