An owner friend of mine considers owning too many mares like having gum on his shoes. My rules to stop this are:
Rule #1
Both females and males can have high genetic strength.
Rule #2
Males are rigidly culled, females are not
Rule #3
The thoroughbred advances in genetic strength through the males.
Rule #4
The thoroughbred regresses to the mean through non-culled females
Ruler #5
The farther one ventures further from high level racing, the less culling that is done with females and now also males
Rule #6
The fields that have made up the first days of racing on the new Tapeta surface are stocked full of horses with little genetic strength and little ability. Owning such stock, let alone paying the expenses is financial suicide, but addictive because the only other alternative explanation is that they are brain dead and it is not politcially correct to call a dummy a dummy.
I've been in the business of analyzing thoroughbred genetic strength for over 30 years, but what I've seen researching stock at Golden Gates these last three days is almost unbelievable. I was studying how the Tapeta surface affected horses to compare with cushion and polytrack all-weather surfaces, but I might instead decide to sell the Brooklyn Bridge to as many owners that race in Northern California as I can and then get out of town before they realize they've been swindled.
I lived in the area and had Bay Meadows as my home track for 17 years and still bet there and follow the racing so I am very familiar with the racing scene.
I'm now finding it fairly easy to make some money betting maiden races at all California tracks and if you go to my web site, you will see two really good prices $133 and $47 at Hollywood and Golden Gate today using my GSV scores.
But the point of this post is to notify those racing in Northern California that the area is a fertile ground for bringing in good horses that are the result of a good culling program. It would be like taking candy from a baby.
Racing can be so much fun, but if you want to improve your racing stock, you must select out the best and cull the rest. Otherwise, trainers, jockeys, etc. get the money and owners drop out of the game.
best, George

Oh yeah? Try telling that to dumbbell Dinny Phipps. The family culled everything and is now left with a barnful of junk. The broodmare band has nothing left that's female tail to Flitabout or Busanda and it now throws sorelegged and crooked goats.

I agree Griff. Rok, If only we could all be so lucky as to throw a bunch of G1 goats. I agree they haven't been the soundeest bunch but their broodmar band is still pretty strong. But please let me know if your mares are stronger. Seems all you do on this site is talk bad about horses and their owners.

Take a look at the last few years - how many horses does Shug even get to the races any more? Phipps horses were never fashion plates, but it's only recently that they're physical train wrecks like Pine Island. Why is that, huh?

Actually, I don't have anything to say about owners as much as I do about trainers. The Phipps clan is the only high profile owner/breeder left in the game - every other major US owner is a commercial buyer. But compare Phipps stock of 10-15 years ago to today. Tell me if you notice a difference and why it exists. Remember in 1994 when Shug was Saratoga's leading trainer? How many races has Shug won at Saratoga over the last two seasons? Shug still trains horses the same way...any other ideas?
Poor Zinn....jealousy rears its ugly head again. Try looking at facts as they really are. This business gives off a lot of spin...only because so many people buy into it.

And that adds what to this discussion? I'm loaded with ammo for a Phipps debate if you want one - how about some stats to disprove a point I've made, Zinn? Oh, I forgot...that would take some thought.
I've written why Dinny is a moron - look at his barn now and what it's done (or not done) over the last two years. Either disprove what I've said or go see a therapist if reality is too much for you to handle.
"Rokebnoxious?" I kinda like that. Call me more names...it makes me think of this song:
