Hey Crew,
I am usually a big fan of the WTBA winter sale but i got to say looking over this year's edition that the yearlings are extremely weak IMO.
I usually find between 10-20 to check out and this year i have found 3.
Derby Connection (Who ever they are?) has brought some decent bred horses but due to the lack of depth in the sale i feel those horses will go for inflated prices.
And what happened to the numbers? The catalog seems to have a lot less horses offered than in the .

There's some decent horses if you look closer. I personally would be wary of the Derby Connection horses, all sold for very cheap at Keeneland Sept.
Makors Mark is looking like he'll be a real good stallion. Hasn't had many to the track from his first small crop but they can run. I'll be looking close at Hip 77. That mare was a runner and she's thrown some nice horses.
Then look at 71 - the dam won 26 times from 3 to 10, and two of her 1/2 brothers raced to 10 and 11, with 16 and 17 wins, respectively. THAT'S durability.
146 should be interesting, Tucumcari was a RUNNER.
119 is from a good family.
116, look at the money the horses under the first 2 dams made, even with no black-type. She might be a steal, esp. with that sire.

Hey Magic Code,
Hip 77? 9 foals 3 winners.....nothing over 30 g's.......not my cup of tea.
Hip 71: Same as above.....not much prodution but will give you that the mare was a solid runner
146: IMO will be the sales topper if its conformation is good.Tucumcari was a running fool!
119; Not bad........nice pick.
116: Dont like the stallion ,wouldnt look twice .
I am not saying that a person cant find a decent horse out of this sale but for years a person was spoiled with good looking individuals for cheap prices. Its too bad that so many stallion have past on in the last 6 years because i feel it shows. I personally dont care for Makor's Mark as a stallion and that is only because he is by Son Of Briartic. He was a nice racehorse.
I look through and keep seeing mares that made either little or no money and have thrown horses which havent earned much either and to top it all off are by sires who either didnt make any money or havent thrown much that have made any money. Im sorry ,seeing horses by Coz, Kentucky Luky, Just Ruler, Kings Drama,Makors Mark,Sum Trick, Russellthemussel or Russian Courage just aint gonna get my blood pumpin.
I am NOT saying any of these horses CANT do something......it just aint going to be any of my money trying to find that out

Point taken.
However, you're looking at some of the last Petersburgs and Slewdledos (and Polish Gifts, Basket Weaves, and Seattle Shamuses). The Just Rulers, Cozs, and Russellthemussells are part of a dispersal, they'll go cheap. Makors Mark doesn't do it for you, but I saw his babies run over the summer and they looked good. (Tribunal and Free At Last don't do it for me.)
I'm biased to 77 as I was a big fan of the dam. Those foals listed ran in 97-98, when purses were at their lowest here.
A few more
78 - another solid family, and a filly, too.
140 might be a bargain - Slewdledo colt, 2nd dam was sent overseas so nothing there but the 1st dam's only foal to race was a higher-level runner at EMD until he became one of the many '07 EMD casualties
145 - full sister to a HOL SP runner last week

Agree that 146 is the likely sale topper.
All of the Derby Connection hips were purchased at the 2007 Keeneland September Yearling Sale. Here are the prices that they sold for a couple of months ago:
42 - $3500
48 - $5000
64 - $2000
82 - $6000
83 - $5000
85 - $5500
104 - $5200
106 - $4700
137 - $3500
149 - $3000

Yeah, he's a half to a stakes winner, out of a young stakes-winning mare, and I like Devil His Due. However, he's the one that cost the most out of all of the Derby Connection pinhooks (can you even call a Sept. yearling to Nov. yearling a pinhook?), and I bet they're hoping he'll be their home run. I'd expect their reserve on him to be at least $10K.

I'm a bit disappointed that more consignors didn't put up photos of their yearling entries. Only three have a photo! and of them, only one person had the presence of mind to place the colt standing with his hind feet DOWN so he looks halfway square
WTBA is advertising like crazy this year on all the local/regional sporthorse magazines and sale pages. It will be interesting to see what (if any) effect this has on sales.

The Polish Gift's should be pretty strong. But overall its not gonna be a strong sale price wise. I bought a Snowbound for $350 last year and she won her third lifetime out the other day at Portland and paid well. Some cheap deals can be had here.
The drive is gonna be crappy with the snow we are getting.

I didn't realize that they'd been advertising in sporthorse publications. It must be fairly cheap to do so. I hope none of mine go to sporthorse folks.
Well, that answers the "no photos" question. Paying a horse into the sale is pretty steep as it is without adding extra cost. The ads I've seen are full-page or half page ads, in all the major sporthorse pubs around here (NW WA), and they aren't all that cheap. Perhaps with outfits like Pegasus and Jones Farm going more to training and conditioning for the sporthorse market, WTBA is figuring they need to get a piece of the pie.
Just for information's sake - and not trying to start a scrap - why would you not want any of your horses to go to "sporthorse folks"? The TBs we have bought have always been treated well and have gone on to productive lives, and I know of at least one yearling colt who would have gone to the killer buyer except my hubby stuck his hand up at the last second.... That one was Reserve Champion at Second Level at the Donida Regional show (that's dressage, folks) a couple years ago with his new owner.
