Colour Advice Needed:Any way to guarantee a true black?

I'd like a true black TB foal as a future sporthorse. Whether a colt or filly, one day we'd probably want to breed him/her if it makes sense. I'm looking at some prospects that are being advertised as homozygous black and I want to make sure I understand if that's a guarantee of black or not. thanks!

Breeding black to black should get you black or chestnut. There are two different genes involved. Base coat color either red or black, and Agouti (bay or not bay)

So you need to look for a horse that either tests EE (black-black in the base coat) and aa (non-bay, non-bay)

That being said, there is still some confusion on just how the other versions of non bay sort themselves out. Versions of the Agouti gene seem to include Wild Bay (a brown horse with minimal points) Seal Brown, and fading black and non fading black.

I want to get my weanling filly tested. She sure had that black silver when she was born.

and this is her at 7 months old after a summer in the Texas sun

concensus from those that have met her is that she is black, only one way to find out I guess.

My guess is black too.

It is pretty easy to guarantee colors if you get all the participants tested and only match those that will give you the color you want.

How is the testing done? Is it a blood sample sent to a lab? Is it something my vet can do?

Hi Mary and Dave,
Sanctuary is a true black homozygous stallion standing at my farm. He is by Halo and out of a multiple graded stakes producing Bold Lad mare.
This year we foaled a homozygous black filly that is a primarily white sabino (Arctic Myriage). She is by our black/white sabino "Painting Freedom" out of the black sabino Secretariat line mare"Blackita Frost".
I have a mare by Broad Brush whose dam Gulch Legacy is a half to Catinca. She will have her first foal in '08 by Grindstone.

Hi Dalene,

I wrote you a few years back, and you had sent me some great pictures of another black colt you had running. I forgot his name, but one of the pics showed him at the finish line and a win pic.

Do you remember who that was?

Also, you would prob. be able to answer this question: have there been any palomino TB race horses? It seems the only Palominos I see that are TB's are just doing the jumping and showing, etc.

I WANT a Pal. TB sooooooo bad. My mare is a blood bay, her dam a pure red chestnut.

I still have Rsocialbutterfly 4 year old black TB mare for sale if anyone interested. She is true black (although I have not had her tested) So I f you were interested you could have her as a broodmare to try to get a black. We are only around the corner from you. pm me if interested.

Hi Terri,
I have seen several really nice looking palominos. I am not aware of a breeder selecting mares for thir racing achievment or superior bloodlines to begin the interesting adventure of creating successful race horses. I sure think it is achievable, just takes time and the continual upgrading of broodmares. I am only refering to achieving racing succes. Certainly the palominos of quality are doing well at the shows.
The black race horse may have been a son of Prince Stanley's, grandson of Secretariat whom we lost several years ago. He was a fine and wonderful stallion.

I have the pictures you sent me safely packed away as I just moved, I will now set out to find out who that was. I think he may have been the Secretariat gr-son. I'm so sorry you lost him. What was his name? That will ring the bell for me!

Thank you for your kindness in the past, and your great info. now. I talked to you when the white TB's had not taken KY by storm yet! You had sent me a pic of the white colt Artic ...., and now I have read about him all grown up. So cool.

I do know of a pure black TB stud on the farm I keep my mare at in Lexington. He is so sweet, and gorgeous. I have to find out his registered name. He is a trained dressage horse, but it turns out his foals are doing great at the track. Go figure....

Dalene, I have recently been following Sanctuary as he seems to be having a bit of success at the racetrack and being of the Halo line. I'm also interested in what I'm assuming is a new addition to your roster - Count Me In. He has a very interesting pedigree also, 3x3 to Weekend Surprise if I'm not mistaken? I'm wondering if Count Me In is that typical late maturing large A.P. Indy style horse.

Anyway I'm excited to hear of these horses and the very best of luck with them. I'll be looking forward with excitement to the progeny of Count Me In and will continue to follow the progeny of Sanctuary at the racetrack.
