List of North America's top 100 race winners in 2007

Postby Rokeby Forever » Sun Dec 16, 2007 9:39 pm

Interesting list:

What I find really interesting: Only 6 out of the 100 on this list raced less than 10 times in 2007. That tells me that horsemanship is still alive, but it's on levels that don't get publicized. You'll see some names you know on this list, but won't see too many from a megastable.

Presidents Intern has a brother who ran seemingly every week. He was a model of consistancy. She should be retired and be a nice broodmare. Shes got 2 big huge ankles.

The number 1 horse on the list is Assmussen's. I notice a couple Scott Lakes in there too. Alot of those horses are 5k starter horses that can only survive if they run once a month

There's another millionaire on that list that needs to be retired. No mega stables my ass. This one comes from one. She deserves to be retired. That "thing" can't take much more.

Check out Presidents Interns sibs and how many starts they have. Why doesnt someone claim her for a Nickle up at Suffolk and get her in foal to something decent. Shed be a nice broodmare, not to mention shes great looking as is the brother

OK...I ran them down and 5 out of the 100 do come out of a megastable. Geesh!

But think about it...why can't a guy with 200 horses in training manage to win 6 or more races in a year with more than one or two horses? Doesn't make sense to me. I remember when horses with six wins in a year wouldn't have come close to making this list.

Probably a big reason is because the claiming is more active. Most guys dont have these horses for years, sometimes they dont have them for more than a month. The nice horses who can win 6 or 7 for you need to be spotted to win, when you do that they get claimed away. I bet most of these horses have been in the hands of megastables at some point.

Agreed. Good claiming barns don't keep them around for long if that's what they are... claimers. success is brought on by a high rate of turn over and running in logical spots... place them to win and loose them= sucess for horse and it's connections

I might be wrong, correct me if I am wrong, but I am pretty sure golden hare is handled, and owned by steve's assistant trainer. I know whenever he races at churchill, assumsen has another horse like him, not as good of course, it was the last horse that beat him, that always runs against him and always looses, and they joke about it being one trainer against the other. he also said (the assistant trainer) that he was able to buy his house off of golden hare

horsemenship is in fact alive and well. alot of these horses I've seen on a month by month basis. you see good jobs being done all thetime, by names who aren' thousehold names and who out of necessity have to figure a way to hold it together.

the job done with lady blue sky is remarkable.

golden hare will be claimed here pretty soon, his conditions run out at the beginning of the year.

Hes a tough take for 30-40k. Hes about 200 years old, and has never ran well for anyone but Assmussen. Sounds like a recipe for taking a bath to me.

How is it that Curlin did not make the list?

OK, you embarrassed me enough..I'm gonna edit the opening.

I don't know about the turnover thing, though. Many times, a prolific winner will move to a new barn and go straight downhill - almost like it came without an instruction manual.

They usually dont pack poison with the horse when they leave certain barns. They seemingly are never the same, go figure

Depends on how aggressively placed the horse was and who it was claimed off of. A trainer doesn't need someone elses "manual." There are people you claim off of and people you don't.
How many mdn 25's did we double jump this summer and win with next out... Some people play the game well and others don't. Claimings great fun if you can do it well, and unloading them is a good thing, they are often claimers for a reason.

I agree Tuc, and I can rattle off 20 trainer names that I'd never think to claim from. Sometimes, toys come with batteries not included.

The claiming game is basically high stakes poker. Sometimes a horse is dropped to get a win and sometimes it's dropped to unload a stiff. It's a lot of fun when you guess right! :D
