I have a youngun with a broken jaw and a sequestrum, so he has to have surgery. His initial workup was at the Miss State vet school, but their estimate for surgery ranges between 2k with no complications of any kind, and FROM 5k if he has to have hardware put in.
I called LSU, and the price that I discussed with their dental specialist was about half what MS State quoted.
When I talked to State again, it was suggested that their estimate might not have included post operative charges.
Anyone know how LSU's work is in terms of quality and cost?
Louisiana folks, tell me about LSU's equine vet department

They are supposed to be the best in the state. They are very friendly and easy to work with, any time we have a issue the local vets cant solve we give LSU a call and they come right to the phone and help us out. I will be taking a mare there next week for a Breeding Soundness Exam, this will be my first visit to have work done at their facility.

When I needed to have chip surgery done on a mare with ankle chips and bone spurs in both ankles, State was $2500 minimum for one. That was extremely high compared to everyone else, including LSU. LSU was 1500 for one, with a discount for multiples. I think the racing industry volume may help keep costs down at LSU, at least for that surgery.
In West Virginia, average chip surgery prices were quoted as $1250.
That experience is why I called LSU for a quote. I have faith in the quality of work at State, but not in their pricing.
