Domino lines

Postby vineyridge » Sat Jan 26, 2008 9:40 am

As far as I know, which is not much, Broad Brush and Ack Ack were the last of the Domino line to breed on tail male.

Are there any others? Are there any now who will keep the line alive?

This was an idle question from the depths of the night.

One of the reasons I asked the below question on the Stallions Forum was to find similar information:

CurrentlyRed wrote:I thought he stood at Highcliff in NY last year. When I looked at their website, there's a different Broad Brush son this year and Best of Luck's link shows 'page not found' on The Blood Horse' even though there's a link to him from the other Highcliff horses.

I know he wasn't a commercial success, but does anyone know what happened to him?

Unfortunately, no one replied. While I don't know where that particular Broad Brush son is, others at stud include:

Include, KY
Concern, OK
Mongoose, FL
Maybry's Boy, NY
Mr. Broad Blade, CA
Let Him Go, IL
Largeandincharge, CA
Gamut, LA
Fincher Branch, TX
Dr. Litin, OR
District, AR

Of them, the most successful is Include at Airdrie at $35,000 for 2008.

Even stepping back in the pedigree and looking at Himyar's larger line, there's only one additional source in most breeding populations. Rough'n Tumble looked promising for a while there, with Flag Raiser and Dr. Fager and several other well-regarded sons--but the only tail-male source widely available now is through Minnesota Mac to Great Above to Holy Bull, who is not only active but has some promising sons starting to emerge.

If you haven't already seen Ellen Parker's comments about the Domino line, you'll want to make sure to check them out: http://www.reines-de-course.com/broad_brush.htm

I had a few e-mail exchanges with a gentleman in North Texas that was standing a stallion Broad and Locust who's tail male Ack Ack. Think I saw where at least one and possibally two offspring of this stallion made it to the track here in Texas (not sure about the latter).

I contacted Highcliff and he was sold to Morocco to stand stud.

Domin lines

Postby Bettina » Tue Jan 29, 2008 4:17 am

Hello,
several years ago a descent of the abovementioned sireline was bred in Germany. His name was Carlton (Teenoso - Youth -Ack Ack o/o Czenia by St. Paddy.) After his racing career he was sent to England and stood in Kent. probably usewd as "NH Sire" (hurdlers/steepchasers). Obviously he wasn't widely used by breeders and only a handful of his offspring is listed. It's very likely he's no more used for thoroughbredbreeding, maybe retired or dead.

Regards, Bettina

Turns out that Ms. Parker has found a couple of more Domino lines that go back to Spy Song.

Don't know if they are still standing, but she's found Alladin Rib and Mr. Brilliant.

i've wondered whether the Jockey Club (and what do they do with all their cash?) might one day begin a breeding project to preserve these nearly extinct lines.

I wouldn't be surprised to see the Domino line make a come back in a few years ... it has come "back from the dead" before. In fact, that it exists today is rather amazing.

Domino himself was a great runner but he sired only about 12 foals because of his early demise. He had 2 sons to make studs: Commando and Disguise. Commando also had a short stallion career, but he got Peter Pan and Colin, the greatest runner of his generation. Peter Pan was a major sire influence for decades with sons like Pennant and Black Toney but that line seems to have died out. Colin had fertility issues and only got about 60 foals in a long life. However, one of those was Neddie, the sire of Good Goods sire of Alsab, great grandsire of Ack Ack!

Quick question please. Is the line considered "carried" by the female side of the family? Meaning, could a BROAD BRUSH mare like FARDA AMIGA carry on the Domino line, if she sired a champion colt?

No, I'm afraid not. That particular terminology only applies to tail-male lines (not that I wouldn't love to see a Champion out of Farda Amiga ).

Lewis Michael can only carry on Nasrullah's line, not Domino's.

Concern already has. Unfortunately Good Night Shirt, this year's jumps racing Eclipse winner, has been gelded. He's a hurdler like McDynamo.
