um... no, it wasn't the most memorable effort in the last 20 years. not even close.

beating a group of allowence horses that some would say can't hold up after a 1:14 3/4ths of a mile is not going to give you anything that is memorable for 20 years. i'm sorry

was it a good performance? you bet. Does he have talent? sure. but I repeat, he didn't go in the race and do anything he wasn't epxected to do. he was much the best and he proved to be much the best. it's not like this was the 04 Breeders Cup and he pasted Roses in May and Ghostzapper to draw off and win or something. my gosh.

I think I am a Pyro imressed person so complain away. He ran a quarter of a mile in that race, and won in hand, drawing away, after closing into moderate fractions. That race didn't set up for a closer to be able to close like he did. It was impressive. Does it make War Pass look even better? Perhaps or maybe this is just another three year old getting good at the right time.

I do not think the author said the most memorable race in the last 20 years, what he said was it was one of the most memorable Triple Crown prep races in the last 20 years. After reading it, Plonk sounds a bit like bdw in his matter-of-fact style of writing, and of course, it is only his opinion, although the facts tend to support that way of thinking concerning Pyro's win.

Pyro's race was as slow as molasses and he would have had no excuse to not win it. The fractions were slow and they finished up even slower - Pyro's late run looks visually impressive, but it's really an optical illusion against slowpokes. Let's see Pyro put in that kind of run against a field that doesn't hit a brick wall then we can say, "Nice effort!"

I do disagree with you Roke. He overcame adversity, and closed like a train. Usually when they go that tediously slow you and both know that horses stuggle to close ground and the speed by rights ought to have carried on. It was visually impressive and he was never asked. It's a nice way to start a TC campaign.

Hey Roke

Was Rags To Riches' and Curlin's finish in the Belmont an optical illusion, same circumstance, slow 3/4's, they might have actually raced the last 1/2 mile?

the thing for me is that Pyro has run 2 other big races in G1's. He closed into a loose on the lead horse who wouldn't have got beat by anyone in his last 2. Now he steps down and gets a pace scenario that says he shouldn't be able to close into but he does, effortlessly (the scary thing is how fast could he have come hom in if he was even touched one or if Bridgemo wasn't trying to put on a show at the end). I love the horse...I'm a sucker for deep closers like him.

Call me a Pyro maniac...I'm trying to find a way to pump his juice into my veins.

I almost went back to change it, but I couldn't think of anything else...I was expecting something...just not from a lady...You never know though it could give me super Pyro powers.

I swear I'm sober...now

I just watched Pyro's replay, and it looks to me (just IMO) that the horse might not want to be a big closer - Shaun Bridgo puts such a strangle on this horse early that Pyro has to make a big late run. It also looks to me like Pyro has passed horses that weren't running very fast down the lane.

I watched Pyro's races as a 2 year old, and I would be more impressed with his finish in the BC Juvie if War Pass didn't finish up in :27. Nobody else in the race did much, but maybe nobody else could handle the mud that day.

No DDT, the Belmont Stakes was not the same circumstance. The first 3/4s was crawled, but the final 3/4s was pretty fast. In Pyro's last effort, the early fractions were slow and the final fractions were slow - the race stunk.

ya, but Roke you can't deny that he came home fast in the Risen Star. Assume the other horses were pawns, if that was a work prepping for the LA Derby you would say it was pretty impressive. Because essentially that's all it was.
