To whom would you mate her?

Postby springboro » Wed Feb 20, 2008 1:03 am

I have a mare that I just can't figure out a breeding.

her name is Helen O. She's my "odd" mare... her sire was an unraced son of Nureyev and had one foal. It's her dam that appealed to me, a champion 2 year old filly in Argentina.

She's already got her share of Northern Dancer through her father. I do like her sire's female family, and considered a Red Ransom horse because of some success there. However, try to find a Red Ransom now!

I realize that this foal will not be a Keeneland sale horse. The resulting foal would be strictly for racing in the Indiana-bred programs.

thoughts or suggestions?

I would be all over adding in more Lavendula blood. You could either double up on Ambiorix which is found in Slew City Slew, or you can go to something with Turn To blood. Out of Place comes to mind at a low fee in Kentucky.

I'm not very familiar with Indiana stallions but Private Lap has some lines of Turn To that would be interesting.

Hi Applesauce,

Welcome to the forum Applesauce.

Curious why would you add more Ambiorix or Lavendula? Doubling Ambiorix in North America hasn't been especially effective.

In Helen O.'s pedigree I see more reason to do so than in others but I'm curious if there's something compelling that I'm missing.

Pete

Hi Springboro,

How does your Indy Mood foal out of Helen O look?

Applesauce recommends more Ambiorix and normally I'd not agree except that Helen O's, 1st dam, Almira, was a fine racehorse by his son, Sheet Anchor. Successful horses have shown a pattern of occassional accumulation of Lavendula rather than direct intent to duplicate her. I'd want any foal that adds their blood to have a high outcross pct.

Try a hypo mating with Helen O. to Ocean Terrace.

Ocean Terrace stands in OK, lightly raced but he's quite the looker and is a graded SW. He would add Ambiorix and 3 strains to Lavendula while still being an outcross. Interesting hypo pedigree.

I don't know if the benefits of the cross with Ocean Terrace would overcome the obstacle of shipping from Ohio to Oklahoma.

I like her a LOT with Grindstone.
