Thoughts on a mare?

Postby Mood Swings » Fri May 16, 2008 7:03 pm

Do you think she is commercial? She has a lovely pedigree and some nice horses under the second dam ...

Thanks :)

From the info that's on pedigree query she's not commercial at all.

(again I'm going by the info on pedigree query that may not be complete or detailed)

Her sire hasn't done much as a stallion.

She was apparently unraced.

Her dam was apparently unraced.

None of her dams produce have done much if anything.

If as you say there are some nice horses under her second dam that's too far back because when you get a foal out of her those nice horses are going to be way back under the foals third dam and the first two dams of the foal are going to be total zeros.

I think you should spend a few dollars to get the updates from equineline. Princess Laila won an allowance race at Woodbine on 9/16/07. She sold for $3K as a weanling $8,500 FTKFeb yearling. Dam was listed as having 3 other winners in KSep 06 catalog #4556 colt by Holy Bull. 2nd dam has SW and SP winner, etc. Souvenir Copy is not a really poor stallion and has a nice pedigree and is Gr2 SW. Souvenir Copy has 75% winners to runners $44K average earnings 2% SW average lifetime starts per runner 15.Breeding to a sire known for sound offspring would be a good idea. There are some that are considered commercial.

Hi Peace,

She has won a couple of allowance races and has earnings in excess of $68,000. She is a half to three other winners. Her dam is a half to a stakes winning mare by Seattle Slew and a G1 placed colt by Gone West. As you say though, that will not show until the third dam on a catalogue page. She is a nice looking, correct mare and is priced right. I think I'd like to take a chance on her seeing as no one can give me a reason not to? ....

That right there is why she will not be commercial in the present US market. Not unless one of her siblings wins a stakes race.

I think she sounds like a good prospect and would be commercial for the Canadian market. Allowance class is just below stakes class and a lot of class horses have raced in allowances including quite a few stakes winners.

I've always been told that as long as there's BT somewhere with the first 3 dams, you have a shot at commercial success (of course there are other factors that come into play). You mention the "present market" in the US - I'm up in Canada so I'd like to hear what you see going on first hand (I'm going to be buying from the US later this year and would like as much info as possible as to the state of the market).

Here's her page when she was a yearling herself:

Now push everything down a generation.

That doesn't scream commercial to me but that's not to say that you couldn't get some useful racehorses out of her. But I wouldn't count on selling them.
