Big Brown and the Triple Crown

It seems that there many people that think Big Brown is all but a sure thing to win the Triple Crown. It has been 30 years since Affirmed last won the elusive crown and there has been a general feeling that the sport needs another Triple Crown winner. Now that Big Brown is positioned to do that, what is your opinion?

I didn't mean "he deservers to win" as in it should be given to him. Once he crosses the line with the rest of the field dragging behind him. He will have proven that he is the best out there now, and is deserving of the triple crown title because of it. Everyone has there opinions about it being a weak year for 3yr old. It's true he has had it easy so far because there has been no horse capable of truly challenging him but that in itself should tell us something. All it comes down to is if he does get across in front which I think he will, he has done something no other horse has been able to do in 30 years and he should get respected for it.

The 'game' doesn't need a triple crown winner, either.

The sport has never been adversely affected by not having a triple crown winner. We've been racing TBs for a couple hundred years... the American triple crown isn't even 100 years old. Outside the US, few people even give a damn if the US has a triple crown winner. How many foreign TC winners have their been in the last 20 years? Didn't Invasor win the ARG one? Canada had 3-4 in a 6 year span, IIRC -- three of them in a row that killed their TC bonus.

ANY country's "triple crown" is an artificial construct of races hyped for attention. Having a horse eligible for one is a temporary attention getter. That's why the Belmont has a bigger drawn when there is one on the line than when there isn't. Once it's over, few casual fans outside the sport even give a damn.

What the sport needs is owners who care more about the sport than their pocketbooks. Owners who will tell the insurance companies to kiss their left ass cheek when they start demanding multi-million dollar premiums to run the horse and who will stop making stallion deals before the horse has even finished it's 3yo season.

You don't make the sport grow by announcing your star power is being retired before the season is even over. 40yo pitchers do that in spring training of their final season. Not wet behind the ears rookies.

For a time I desired another Triple Crown winner. But with some thought, I realize it isn't a big deal to me anymore...I was spoiled on the last winner, Affirmed, and his battles with Alydar. I would rather have that memory than to have some horse "dominate" a mediocre crop and then promptly retire to the breeding shed.

If it's not that important to have a TC winner then why are some mighty stupid people going to pay a small fortune to own a piece of a decent bred, not great bred, horse named Big Brown???? Assuming he wins the Belmont!! When you start talking about syndication upwards of $50 million you can get my attention. To have a TC winner will be fantastic for the game, especially for those of us that can dream bigger than a thimble full. I felt more passion today arguing with the know-it-all 20 something about how people like him swallow the punch when some other know-it-all BS's him on how great a multi-million computer system is and how it will make our jobs easier (read "it's gonna replace YOU fool") than I have had since 1978's TC....or maybe 1979's when I burst into tears as a 10 year watching the lame Bid come home third in the Belmont....

The only ones who are blind are those who fall for the hype of a horse who hasn't and won't be able to prove his worth and will ignorantly spend millions in pursuit of a delusion because "This game is all about dreaming!!!!!!!!"

I don't want to chase a rabbit out of context. But, how on earth does anything get done without dreaming? Keep it up LG - and any of you that are aiming for a classic winner. I hope that your results exceed your wildest expectations. As for millions, it would be nice to have enough to blow it on a horse or two. Personally, can't relate to that in any way, shape, or form. However, life is short. Why not enjoy it?
