Nick Zito stated after this year's Belmont Stakes that the main reason we haven't seen an American Triple Crown winner since the 1970's is because the competition is much keener now than it was then.
Any thoughts on this opinion?

Zito's just being nice after spoiling another party. The reason that there are so few triple crown winners is because it's a mammoth task to ask any horse. Three different track surfaces ,three different distances and everywhere are horses being pointed to a specific classic instead of the whole series, they will be fresh and waiting for you! It takes a truly great horse to weather this storm and we have not seen one lately,it's that simple.
How about when he said the trainers were better? That one gave me a hoot. Sunny Jim, Ben Jones, Jimmy Jones, Charlie Whittingham, Mack Miller. Hmmm....

hi wilf
Following are two quotes credited to Desormeaux (at brisnet.com) from a section titled: Belmont They Said It - 5/7/2008... the second quote below (which I bolded in blue) seems to parallel your comments (above) .
"I think I'm numb, really. A little lost. Just feeling no emotion whatsoever; blank."
—jockey Kent Desormeaux on how he felt after pulling up Kentucky Derby (G1) and Preakness S. (G1) hero Big Brown in the stretch of the Belmont
"Well, we were just talking about that in the jocks' room. I can't fathom what kind of freaks those 11 Triple Crown winners were. It's unfathomable to me."
—Desormeaux on what it takes to win the Triple Crown
