Indiana Racing Stock Sale

Postby Roguelet » Sat May 10, 2008 8:27 pm

ITOBA is doing something different this year; we're still hashing out a few details but I wanted to start spreading the word so people can get ready.

Instead of an "All Ages Sale" in August like we've done in the past, we will have a "Racing Stock Sale" in August. We plan to have a "Breeding Stock Sale" / "All Ages Sale" / "Paddock Sale" combined type thing in the Fall, so those looking to consign or purchase broodmares, etc. don't fear; you will have that opportunity later.

So, the "Racing Stock Sale" will be for yearlings, 2 year olds, and horses of racing age. There will be an under tack show on Saturday (tentatively August 16th) and the sale itself will be on Sunday (tentatively August 17th.)

At the under tack show, horses can either turn in a timed work or just gallop, whatever their training level at the time dictates. We plan to film the under tack show and make the video available Sunday morning for those who are unable to attend in person Saturday. We are also looking into having another day to videotape sale horses working prior to the sale weekend. We plan to provide the saddle cloths early enough that consigned horses can wear them on the track each time they work, whether it's timed or not, so people will know which horses to watch leading up to the sale.

The Racing Stock Sale will be open to Thoroughbred and Quarter Horse consignments. Consignment contracts are being re-worked now and will be available before long.

Thanks to those who have turned in their consignment contracts... anyone else wanting to enter? Let me know; I can take late entries and get you into the catalog as long as the Jockey Club isn't ready to hip the pages yet, but there's not much time so please let me know if you have an entry but haven't turned in your paperwork yet. It's best to fax as well as snail mail at this point; then I'll have your entry immediately.

The catalog did make it online last week but I never posted that here... sorry!

Anyway, you can go to www.itoba.com and find the online catalog for TB and QH entries.

There is another late QH entry posted on the ITOBA web site.

Is anyone here planning to go to this sale, either Saturday or Sunday or both days?

HOw did the sale go? I was running up at Mountaineer and missed it. Do you have a date set for the paddock sale?

Thanks

Overall, I'd say it went well. The under tack show could have been better, but considering that this was our first attempt at something like this, I think it went OK. We're making notes on ways to improve next year.

Most horses had reserves, which has not often been the case at Indiana sales. The increase of Indiana stakes race purses to $100,000 at Hoosier this Fall and increased bred/sired purses encouraged consignors to expect more for their horses, and also encouraged buyers to spend a bit more to get horses who are eligible to run for those purses.

The days of buyers expecing to purchase an Indiana bred/sired horse for less than peanuts appear to be in the past. Buyers were more serious at this sale; I saw a lot of people asking for horses to be taken out and walked for them; people inspecting horses more closely, etc. Some of the RNA's were bid up rather high, so even though the results show a lot of RNA's, the overall tone is encouraging.

We have a tentative date of October 25 and/or 26 for the next sale... it's not going to be our traditional Paddock Sale; it will be more of a Breeding Stock and All Ages sale, and will likely not be at Hoosier Park. People who want to consign their older racers in search of second career or breeder homes will still be able to use this sale for that purpose. I should have more information in the next day or two, and I'll be sure to post once I do.
