i think curlin is better, but i am more impressed by this race moreso than any other he has ran to date.

Still unimpressed. A decent group of horses, but not anything that will win a BC race this year. Sure there were graded winners in the field, but BB has to really spark it up to win HOY. It was a non graded stake (about equal to an allowance race), created specifically for him. He better win it.
Still not headed to his corner. Not now or in the coming weeks.
The soft turf course was likely a welcome change to his feet. And it showed in his stride. BUT he got an easy lead, loped along uncontested and had to grind it out. In this field (if it is his preferred surface) he ought to have drawn off comfortably

I might respect him more had he done that on dirt against better than allowance/ grade 2 horses, not in a race that was written for him and sponsored by his owners. Just a BS type of win

Well, I have to disagree with the prevailing wisdom here. I was impressed today. In my opinion a far better effort than the Haskell. My question had been, is he as good a horse off of steroids as he showed himself to be earlier in the Florida Derby and the Kentucky Derby? Maybe he still isn't, but today he was more than good enough. Good enough to beat Henry the Navigator? I don't know, but it will be fun to watch. He showed me a lot today.

I think he is a grade 1 turf horse.

I do not think he's a world class turf horse. Henry or Duke would make gator bait out of him with that performance today

I didn't bother to watch the race. I really don't care. And if he wins HOY then horse racing is the biggest farce in sportsdom.

Well, I'm new here, but not new to racing, and I have to say Curlin is the one of the best horses to come along in quite awhile. I will concede that sometimes it's hard to seperate the horses' from their connections. And Curlin's majority owner consistently displays so much class, while Big Brown's connections often come across as street punks looking for a squabble - I admit that colors my personal bias as far as "rooting" for Big Brown ( I can't any longer). But when watching just the horses, Curlin is still the most impressive time and time again.

Aside from whatever the hell happened in the Belmont, all Big Brown has done is won every race he has entered. Hate his connections if you must, but give the horse some credit.

BB won, but it certainly didn't look like he could have held off his competition for another furlong. This race was written to make sure a BC class horse wouldn't enter and BB had to fight to win. I was impressed with his tenacity and lack of quit in the stretch. The result confirmed my opinion that he only looked impressive in the spring because he was all grown up and the competition hadn't yet (much like a 6'5" 12 year old might 'appear' to excel at basketball against other 12 year olds). BB is a very good horse, I'm not yet convinced however that he is even the best 3yo of 2008, forget HoY.

Here's my take. First, BB figured out another way to win and did so in impressive fashion IMO. I disagree with one of the assertions above that this was the equivalent of an allowance race. With multiple Gr. II winners and the high purse, I considered it a solid Gr. II caliber race. This horse is now 7 for 8 and that can't be denied--He simply finds a way to win when he needs to and I think that's a true measure of greatness.

That being said, if Jackson rolls the dice and enters Curlin in the Classic and if BB wins or at least finishes ahead of Curlin, this still would not convincingly prove that BB is "better." BB would have a long way to go to match the accolades of Curlin's celebrated career and whatever happens in the Classic should not severely affect the legacy of Curlin.

I honestly think that Curlin might be showing the signs of wear and tear after 2 years of intensive training and global travel and might've lost a step. The Curlin from August '07 to March or maybe May of this year was absolutely dominating and IMO, could have been competitive with any horse from any time. Since this spring, though, I think through the natural progression of time and toll, his dominance might be coming to a close and should the 2 giants battle one another, it would be the equivalent of a 38yo human athlete v. a 27yo.
