Commercial value in broodmares and up close blacktype

Postby mary » Tue Sep 23, 2008 12:22 pm

I'm just curious, when people talk about commercial value in broodmares relative to up close blacktype what does that mean? Black type within the first or second dam's runners? Graded stakes relatives? Siblings who are winners? Somebody please advise, thanks a lot.

Close up blacktype, to me, means that the mare is half or full sister to graded stakes winners and/or graded stakes producers, if she is a young mare. If she is a bit older, she is that PLUS being a stakes producer.

Good blacktype close up can come from several different sources. It might mean that the mare's dam is a graded stakes winner (or a stakes winner at a good track). Ideally, the 1st dam should also have produced blacktype assuming she's old enough to have several offspring of racing age.

When you are talking about a mare--not a yearling--blacktype under the 2nd dam isn't enough as there will be 2 "blank dams" on the page when the offspring sell.

And of course the older the mare is, the more important it becomes that she has her own blacktype.
