Thoughts on breeding

Hello everyone

I was wondering what your thoughts would be on inbreeding to Herbager 4s x 5d? My mare is Sexiano and I haven't left the computer all day just scanning the net for a possible nick. I have found a unproven Saint Ballado stallion son, Fisher of Men, in San Antonio, Texas. I haven't seen him or a pic, but I plan on making a quick trip in the near futre. The inbreeding is

Herbager 4s x 5d 9.38%
ND 4x x 5D 9.38%
Hail to Reason 4S x7d 7.03%
Mahmoud 6s x 6S x 8s x 8s x 7s x 8d x 8d x 7D 6.25%
Almahmoud 5s x6s x 7d 5.47%
Swaps (favorite) 6s x 5d 4.69%
etc...

I would really appreciate any input that everyone may have. The foal will be for strictly racing.

I suspect, with the way this economy is going you will be able to buy a far better horse that is ready to start training now than you can breed for far less money than it will take to get a 2010 home bred horse to the track in 2013

Griff, you are so right about the economy, however, a barren broodmare is useless. We already picked up two yearlings this fall; we have couple at the track; two weanlings and 3 mares to foal next year...2013 doesn't sound so bad

I love the studying, and Zarakava was a homebred for Aga Khan maybe us little people can get lucky also.

In your shoes, I would probably be less concerned with nicks and more concerned with the quality of the stallion. An unproven sire who wasn't a winner on the track offers very little to someone who's looking to breed racehorses.

I would agree that Ocean Terrace is a better option for you. He stands in Pryor, OK (about 276 miles from you) for $2000 LF, was a stakes winner and is out of a stakes winning mare. You might be able to get a season to him through the Iowa Stallion Season Auction for as little as $500 live foal (plus $50 to join the ITBOA). FYI- if you are looking at a listing that has Fisher of Men standing at Zoeller Ranch that is incorrect. He was going to stand there last season but the deal fell through. I am not sure where he ended up. They do stand another Saint Ballado son named Tomas the Saint. He is out of a good South American mare who's yearling by Vindication sold for $1 million at Keenland last year. He is also unproven, his first foals will be born this year.

If you are looking to breed in this area send me a PM and I can direct you toward some nice stallions (sons of Deputy Minister, Unbridled, Unbridleds Song) all in San Antonio. I agree that right now you can buy one cheaper than you can raise one, but if you have a mare you can also get some good deals on stud fees without having to ship.

If you are able to care for your mare and foals yourself, your mare is probably worth breeding in our Texas market -- even with our troubles. The number of Texas bred foals is decreasing, but there will still be Texas accredited races to fill in the future. There are several good stallions standing in Texas that have proven themselves. I am not unbiased, but based upon your mare's pedigree, I would take a serious look at Uncle Abbie. He has done well with Seattle Slew line mares.

Sexi is in currenty in foal to Sand Ridge, who unfortunately is no longer with us. She has a Running Stag weanling, Mirskofen, who is not the prettiest thing but she is one tough filly! Her first foal was a Captian Countdown but we bred her ( two vet approval's off the track) and she carried it full term but the foal died. We looked at Uncle Abbie this year and still went with Sand Ridge (In Reality) and he is still in the running. I had planned on breeding Sexi to Pass the Peace but I changed my mind and went with Running Stag figuring that he would only be hereB one breeding season (I was right. he is now in LA.): Pass the Peace (St. Ballado) passed away also

Ocean Terrace is a very nice horse and is 1/2 of what I am looking for, however, he is a bit further than I want to travel - San Marcos, Tx is abotu 500 miles away.. long trip.

I did call today on Fisher of Men and he is not in San Antonio (he had a bow and she was not sure what happened to him). I had already seen Tomas the Saint and they still have him.

I am driving my self crazy and the 2009 Stallion book is not even out yet. lol
If you onwed Sexiano who would you breeed to for a very reasonable price in Texas...I cannot afford Valid Expectations, but have looked at Expect Will.

I hope that you will let us know about the Sand Ridge foal to be, when it arrives. I have had three and loved each one of them. I was planning to go back to Sand Ridge next year, but alas.... To me the fun is in contemplating the breeding choices. There really are a lot of good stallions in Texas for very reasonable fees. However, you have to be very careful about considering where you are sending your mare. Costs of mare care, and the care itself are big considerations for me. You have to be able to trust the farm and its management, because this can be a bigger cost in the end than the stud fee. Just my opinion.

If you're looking for a Saint Ballado stallion, Try Run Production in LA. He stands at Foxwood in the Shreveport area for $1500 and is starting to get some nice runners. 2 stakes winners from 19 runners so far- I just watched one yesterday win a stakes in open company at the Fairgrounds.

I will surely keep you up to date with my Sand Ridge foals, as I hope that you will with yours.

I was very seriously considering going back to him 2009. I was also looking at Pin Stripe (been looking a lot LOL). Do you know anything about him? He is supposedly in Boyd, Texas. Mr P over a Blusing Groom mare and Dr. Fager ... I don't get the Herbarger, but I love the double up on Dr. Fager

Nice horse! I ran a hypomating with him and Sexi and the foal is 4sx5d Herbager, 4Sx7d Hail to Reason and Swaps 6dx5d - I love it

.... basically a total outcross

I have never seen Run Production- he is 6 hours away from me- I just keep seeing his offsprig hitting the board recently. There is nothing in the LA stallion register from last year, maybe they will place an ad this year- have not even seen a pic (anybody have one??).
One of our clients uses Patrick Mouton as their trainer, and he mentioned the horse to them- said he was throwing some nice prospects.
This is the same farm who stood the horse Zarbyev forever, and I imagine now they have a bunch of his daughters in their broodmare band, and picked this horse to fit with them.
