Things that make you go hmmmm

Take a look at this: Cuban Coffee

Now, I ask you .. what's wrong with this picture :?:

Off the top of my head, I'm thinking this is the only horse this guy owns and she's an indulgence.

Her PPs are interesting. She's never come closer than 5th in her entire career. They've tried a multitude of distances and surfaces with her, but they've never dropped her below the $7,500 maiden claimer ranks -- which were a bad choice. One was at 5.5f, the other at 6.5f and she finished 7th out of 10 both times.

Her best finishes have all been a mile on the grass yet they changed distance/surfaces and raised her in class after she did it :?

Gulfstream/Calder to Louisiana to Houston. As high as $23.5 MSW and as low as $7.5k MC last year. Has made two starts so far this year at 6 and 6.5f on dirt at the $10k level (6th of 12 and 6th of 9, respectively).

You can't convince me they can't find a $5k MC at a mile on the grass SOMEwhere down there by now. That's what she's practically begging for.

Sam i dont know of any track that offers 5K MC on the grass. Probably the cheapest Maiden Claimer on the grass would probably be 25K.

Penn National runs $3.5k CLM ... I thought I'd seen some $5k at Delta

Suffolk runs $5K MC on the grass too.. They run $20-25K (can't remember which) MC and then a drop down to 5 on the grass.
Racing and retraining.

Sam-delta does not have a turf course-they do run 5K claimers and 4K claimers but only on the dirt.

Katie- Sweep Choice half brother or sister sells tomorrow at ocala Hip #31

northern califonia has maiden 8,000...and they can get pretty easy at the summer fairs. The Sonoma County fair has a new turf course coming up this year...maybe some cheap maiden claimers on the grass, with the small fields in NorCal..anything's possible.

Sam,

Maybe your memory is better than mine, but wasn't Cafe Latte a decent horse ? I don't remember the record, but do remember the name. I don't have an APR to look it up.

Penn Nat does run 5F turf in the summer at all purses and prices. Some claimers go down to $2,500, not sure of the turf. Think that was the bottom and with slots we should go up in purses and possibly claiming prices. $4K is the bottom at Philly in 2004, but not sure if they card for bottom levels in turf. The turf courses are so bad here they only run 2 a day in good weather.

The one thing I have liked, to an extent, about Magna is their rebuilding racing surfaces. We have $4K Claimers running 1:10:2/5th at Philly because we have no cushion. They are getting 46 Beyer's with that. Used to be a 1:10 at Philly was a 85-90 BSF.

However, I don't like the 12 foot rail at Gulfstream, which I think caused the Gary Boulanger incident. the 84' rail is a nice course. The 12' rail is worse than a 7F course on a mile track.

Not this one's momma. She was a 2 for 12 Kipper Kelly mare from about 3 generations of dirt. 3rd dam was Crempello half to a little bit of Euro black type, but that's about it.

You're probably thinking of the Irish mare, Caffe Latte, by Seattle Dancer. Ran off with the Ramona and Santa Barbara handicaps about 5 years ago.

Yes, thank you Sam, that is exactly who I was thinking about. As we get older the mind just has pieces left, but the name rung a bell and you put it all in place. Thanks for the info, I was just a tad off.

She's baaaaaaaaack.

smirk

$10k maiden claimer at Houston going 5.5 furlongs where she ran 6th most of the way before fading back to 10th (from 11 starters).

She's now sporting a record of 26 starts, 0 wins, 0 seconds, 0 thirds.

Okay .. at what point do you give her away (or worse, send her to the knackers)?
