Well I am still trying to figure out how HARNESS racing got MORE days added.... grant you it's 36 but c'mon HARNESS RACING???!! I am guessing because we aren't surrounded by harness tracks that gives them an anchor at CNL? And I heard rumblings that it was even being considered to combine the 2 seasons..... That would be interestingly bad.
trying to come up with something brillant..... this may take a while.
That's a novel idea.
Well they do QH and Arabian mixed cards all the time. It actually might work if they had a separate training track and ran all of the TB races on the turf. But they would never get whole stables to ship in for a handful of races a day.
My guess is that trainers look at the limited number of days racing in VA and figure that they can stay put, race in Pa, DE, WV or wherever and ship into Cnl if a horse really fits a race there. Swoop in, take the purse and let the locals scrounge for what little is left.

VA racing will not "get going" until VA approves slots for CD, and that will not happen as long as the religious right is head quartered in VA Beach.

PS: I belive all or at least a very large percentage of the stalls at CD were filled last year.. That may change if they reduce the racing days but I don't a reduction from 45 to 40 is going to make that much os a differience,

I sent them an email.
what do you think the chances are that somebody will bother to get back?
Or maybe the Governor has whacked their staffing like everybody else.
Come to think of it - what does the VRC do outside of the 30 days or so the meet is in progress? Might be interesting to tak a look at where the money goes regarding that agency.

I think they will still be bickering about it at the next meeting coming up. I can't see why if the horsemen's association is willing to float them a 3 million dollar loan that Colonial CLAIMS it needs to keep the meet at current levels. I also don't see why Colonial , if it does indeed reduce days , at least open longer for the horsemen to train so that shipping out becomes a feasible alternative to quite a few. But what do I know?

I assume VTA has considered the option of keeping Colonial Downs open as a training facility .
Middleburg seems to do well with no racing at all and I beleive Bowie is also used mostly for training. I don't know about Bowie but Middleburg provides excellent turn-out which Colonail Downs does not have.

That 50% for owners was in 2007 in 2008 they made it 100% for owners and left nothing for the breeder's. They didn't think there would be that many VA bred winner's this year and when to my thinking they could not stop giving the 100% owner's awards midway thru the meet or have egg on their face and would have given them bad publicity and they would not have owner's bring their horses back next year (2009). So the breeder's are the one's that got hurt. I think they have made a few of the graded stakes higher for this coming year (2009) to draw the horses instead of trying to give that money to the breeder's for their awards this year.
I agree the breeder's should get their money first, but not. The owner's get their money first and the breeder's don't get their money, if there is any until Jan/Feb of the following year. So the money I would have gotten for the 2008 meet would not have been received by me until Jan/Feb 2009.
I got a response from the VRC to the effect that
"Please rest assured that in 2009 the VA Breeders Fund will continue to be disbursed to the owners and breeders of purse-winning VA-bred horses. A problem arose with the payment of the 2008 Breeders awards when the 100% owner's bonus far exceeded the anticipated payout levels thereby draining the Breeders Fund to the point where the only VA Breeders in 2008 to have thus far been paid are the ones that also owned the purse-winning horses."
So I am sure the check will be in the mail shortly. If you get one, cash it immediately while its still good.

Joltman thanks for the update.......you better believe I will run and not walk to the bank if I get my check! What are they going to do differently in 2009 to prevent this from happening again, since they have no idea how many VA bred horses will race there in 2009? Again, they already paid the owner's of the horses who where also the breeder. Still the breeder is on the bottom of the ladder. The only way to get your money first is to own and breed your own horse and not breed to sell.
