The World's Most Exciting Grey Horses

Postby wangkw » Mon Mar 30, 2009 7:17 pm

In equine terminology, a grey horse is defined as one with grey or white fur on the 4-legged fellow's dark colored skin (A white horse per se
is one with white fur on a pink skin and blue eyes..the species which , if for humans, is called Aryan and was often favorably referred to by
Hitler).

Here we shall make no difference among them, be it grey or white (It doesn't matter it is a black or white cat    ).

Some of the great grey horses after the turn of the previous century are :

Native Dancer (1951) : A dominant sire in the 2nd half of the 20th century. Good racing record himself with 21-1-0 in all 22 starts and earnings 785k.
He was noneotherthan the maternal grandfather of the most famous racehorse cum sire, Northern Dancer.

The Tetrarch (1911) : Scored a 7 for 7. Timeform rated him the world's No 1 2yo in the 20th century. A prominent sprinter in UK.

Baytown (1925) : Irish Derby and Irish 2000 Guineas winners

Caro (1967) : A prominant French mid-distance winner in G1 & G2.

Crystal Palace (1974) : French Derby winner.

Cozzene (1980) : Eclipse champion turf horse in 1985. Won the year's BC Mile.

Mahmoud (1933) : UK Derby winner.

Polynesian (1942) : Preakness Stakes winner.

Tetratema (1917) : Won 13 out of 16 starts. UK 2000 Guineas winner. Champion UK sire in 1929.

Kong : Dam of Nimbus which raced 6-2-1 in 9 starts and was unbeated 3yo and champion 3yo.

Grey Swallow (2001) : Irish 2yo champion and 3yo champion. Irish Derby winner.

Daylami (1994) : Emirates world racing series champion in 1999. Eclipse champion turf horse in 1999. BC Turf and Man O'war winner.

Silver Charm (1994) : Eclipse Champion 3YO. Winner of Kentucky Derby and Preakness S but denied of triple crown in Belmont S
by 3/4 length. Dubai World Cup winner. BC Classic 2nd to Awesome Again also by 3/4.

Monarchos (1998) : Kentucky Derby and Florida Derby winner.

Wait A while (2003) : Eclipse Champion 3yo filly. Winner of G1 & G2 in US.

Alama ! (= OMG)..How can the highly regarded Spectacular Bid be left in the lurch? No wonder the corner of my right eye
kept twitching in the whole afternoon..sure in..in fact should be near top of the list of honour.

9 for 9 in 1980, he missed the triple crown in Belmont S finishing 3rd, albeit a distant one..reining world record holder for
1& 1/4 mile dirt under 1:58.

List far from being exhaustive...................

And how could we leave out the first gray Kentucky Derby winner (1954), Determine, who also sired the next gray Kentucky Derby winner (1962) in Decidedly. Determine was an incredibly courageous performer, in spite of his tiny size. He ran against the best and could always be counted on to run his heart out. He was a fine sire (2 year old champion Warfare, etc.), despite his standing in California to mediocre (at best) mares.

what a fantastic horse Dessie was

I also think Dalakhani the 2003 Prix du Jockey club and Arc winner was a grey horse and a pretty useful one aswell.

Wang, how about the best 3yr old filly I ever saw , SURROUND, still the only filly to win the W.S.Cox Plate which is the Aussie WFA premier race run in the spring. The mighty Ming Dynasty, winner of two Australian Cups, two Caulfield Cups and the AJC Metropolitan.

When I was a kid there was this gray horse who was a fairly average runner until it rained. He then became a world beater. His name was Here Comes Trouble..
