Well - MAYBE I got the world's first smoky cream TB???

Postby TrueColours » Wed Apr 22, 2009 7:16 am

Well - I know its a filly at least and I am PRETTY certain she is not cremello

Pearlescent delivered her foal a few hours ago. For those that dont know, Pearl is a perlino and the sire - Guaranteed Gold - is a cremello, so the only option here is a double dilute - nothing else is possible.

The foal was VERY dark at birth. So much so you'd swear it was a a very very dark/sooty palomino.

The mane and tail are a dark mocha colour and side by side against Pearl, you can definately see the red tinge to her mane and tail and the chocolate tinge to the filly's. Pearl's coat is very pale - almost white - and this filly is a soft mocha colour head to toe

So - without further ado - here she is!

So - what do you all think??? Did I get the world's first smoky cream Thoroughbred or not?! :) Or is there simply no way at all of knowing without getting the genetic tests done?

Very pretty filly, but for smoky cream, I don't know. If these pictures were at birth, she'll probably lighten as she gets older. Some babies are born and look really dark, but then lighten up after a few days

She's a real cutie, Donna!!! Congratulations! I ran the parental combination through the Coat Color Calculator that I like to use, and this is what it gave me:

Offspring Color Probability

50.00% - Cremello
37.50% - Perlino
12.50% - Smoky Cream

So, there is a chance, albeit small, that she is a smoky cream. That said, I think you are definitely going to need to send off some mane hairs to UC-Davis in order to get it nailed down. Personally, I think she looks perlino. My perlino stud has lots of sooty colored hairs in his tail, too, and even some straight up black ones.

Gorgeous baby. Keep us posted as she grows up! :)

Yeah I know, and there was also a 4.25% chance of getting a smoky black sabino from the GG/Puchi Trap cross last year and thats exactly what happened with Nightlight!

Gorgeous baby. Keep us posted as she grows up!

Thanks - she'll be leaving in around September to go to her new home in CO, so I am pretty certain her new owners will send pictures as she grows up that I can post! :)

Pearl is turning out to be a fabulous Mom, especially for a young maiden mare. I am SO pleased with her! :)

Tail hair went in today so I should have the results back in another week or so ...

Donna, Pearl has turned out to be a lovely mare.....I remember the first photo you showed me, she was a yearling and still in her growing stages. She's very shapely and nice and has a sweet face. I can tell that she's quite smitten with her foal. Congrats again. :)

Thanks Carolyn and Donna! :)

Pearl has matured into a beautiful mare for sure. It was almost hard to tell when she was in foal as she was so portly looking, but now that she has shed the baby weight, she has emerged as a truly beautiful, well conformed mare

Thanks again - I am so pleased with what this cross has produced for me!

Have you sent out the hairs to get the DNA ?

Can we not take votes in for what the color is in the time waiting ?
A Poll maybe?

I would vote for smoky cream....

Well - its going to be a short poll! I spoke to the lab yesterday and they said they should have results last night or this morning so I will know very soon

I'm sure they'll email me as soon as they have them so I stop calling them as well!

I'll post as soon as I know anything but I am voting for smoky cream as well ... :)
