Who called this race again? Totally blew it, MTB was 4-5 lengths clear before he realized what/who just happened. Had me confused, I thought Pioneer of the Nile was drawing off.

I don't think Durkin could see that pint sized dynamo flying up the rail. The behemoth, Pioneer of thr Nile blocked everyone's view of the rail and Bo-Rail snuck MMB through a little hole on the rail. Gutsy horse too.

Well folks there are many ways to win and lose a race. MTB got squeezed early and was taken out of his game but lo and behold he had Calvin on board who has enough experience to settle him and save ground. The horse obviously relished the track conditions and to look at him you see his sire with that lovely plain head ,honest eyes and ears, just a working horse having a great time. The trainer seemed a humourless type but he had probably been driven nuts by all the yapping commentators and their own grating questions...........can't blame him really and he did ask to speak again so he could give credit to Dave Cotey in Canada. All in all a fun day and no breakdowns or crap from Dutrow,Mullins or Iavarone to listen to.

This morning, my neighbor asked me to put $20 on Mine that Bird because he had the "best" dosage figure. When I gave him his $1,032 this evening, he told me he thought the higher the dosage figure the better.

I love it!! We watched this out in the barn with our horses. I was lamenting about the fact that we didn't go to a Derby Party and my husband was patting our little TINY 2 year old on the head telling her to watch how the big boys do it..well to hell with the missed party, it's a happy day for us, the owners of a small tiny filly lol!! Hope is a pretty priceless thing sometimes !!

(on a side note all my horses went nuts for the Bud Clyde commercial... it scared the living beegees out of us!!)
trying to come up with something brillant..... this may take a while. :)

There I was, no lie, watching the Derby, thinking Pioneerof the Nile was home free and then, then this horse comes out of the blue along the rail...HOLY CRAP HE'S GONNA WIN!!! I was shocked silly to say the least.

Funny thing is, when Calvin took him back I said out loud to the cat, "He's running like Silky Sullivan!" Sure enough, Mine That Bird pulled a Silky on everyone.

I think the whole MTB crew, save for Calvin, was in shock. Nobody expected this...and that's what makes racing special.

Never underestimate the little guy! Birdstone passed on the upset gene to MTB for sure!

He may not have had the longest odds of all time, but that has to be the biggest upset of all time. He improved over 20 lengths from his prior races based on speed figures. Even Giacomo had run mid to upper 90s beyers prior to the Derby. It was an incredible ride, but that horse was moving so fast past horses like he was on a conveyor belt. Didn't seem like the same horse that couldn't finish in the money in the Sunland Derby. He was soooo far back after 1/2 mile though, Durkin almost missed him. Then he did miss him coming up the rail, like when Trevor missed Street Sense in the BC Juvenile. Wow.

I've replayed the race five times and I still can't believe it. Bumped coming out of the gate, squeezed back to last and so far back going into the first turn he looked like he was done. Then that incredible move in the stretch. What a race.

If you read the chart, there was a lot of bumping and getting squeezed during the race. MTB got bumped and squeezed back at the start--Borel was wise to take him back to settle him and bide his time while the others did all the shuffling in front of them. Still an amazing race....wow....

Unless you're shooting through a pony-sized hole along the rail....in that case, the smaller the better!

congrats to the winner. What a turn of foot about 3 furlongs out. On paper, who could have picked this horse? Maybe the breeding with Birdstone and Smart Strike there, but otherwise he's easy to ignore. So for months the Derby trail is so focused on what's going on in Florida, California, etc., and winner comes out of Canada via New Mexico. What a story.

I thoroughly enjoyed the two days of racing! I lost money in the Derby, but I could care less! It was just good racing!

Another thing I found amusing....after Rachel Alexandra's owner said over and over again how the Derby is meant to "showcase future stallions", a gelding wins.

Another horse run through a hole in the wind ? I thought Secretariat was the only thing that can do it.

MTB is just an ordinary bird..at most..trust me..can never fight the secretary.
