Birdstone

Any thoughts on this guy... doing very well with only 62 runners (half as many as most other freshman sires). Also, interesting inbreeding if you have a storm cat family mare. You would inbreed to Storm Bird, but NOT storm cat... it's a Storm Bird mare. Thoughts?

A first time starter (Resplendently) at Hollywood Park ran a real nice race today. I like what I've seen thus far.

I saw resplensendtly run today at Hollywood. Nice for his first start. I had a weird feeling he would run pretty well too.

two Derby horses and an Oaks filly in his first crop. I suspect he'll bump up in the sales and price now.

Pretty impressive. Bet he's a surprise success for many Hardboots.. Does Marylou still own him?

Definitely a suprise along with his peers Candy Ride and Stroll. Nothing harder than picking which sires will make it. Birdstone is so friggin cute too isn't he?

Yes, Birdstone is definitely a cutie, as is Mine That Bird ... tell you what I absolutely LOVE ... Medaglia d'Oro, Tapit and Birdstone are all siring some top-notch racehorses at a fraction of the stud fee of (drum roll, please!) Smarty Jones, whose first couple of years at stud were at $100,000 a pop. Three Chimneys is desperately trying to generate some interest in Smarty with strip ads that proclaim he's had this winner and that winner ... but the bottom line is, he has no graded stakes winners in this country thus far, and just a sprinkling of allowance and maiden special weight winners this year. I liked Smarty as a racehorse, but I always thought that his $100K stud fee was obscene and downright greedy by the syndicate that owns him, and now his commercial value and appeal is probably completely shot. All hail Birdstone for knocking one out of the park yesterday!

When I saw Birdstone in person I fell in love. He's just gorgeous and I'm so glad he's starting out with a bang! I feel bad for Smarty though but I did think that fee was obscene!

Gainesway sure hit a home run with Birdstone and Tapit, two smaller athletic looking horses. Maybe people will eventually start looking for that type at the sales now too.

MTB has his sire's compact, rounded shape too. These are great pics of Birdstone.

What a nice thing to say! :D

I took the photos about 2 years ago in 2007. I remember thinking at the time that Birdstone was a remarkably good looking horse and had a real presence about him in a quiet unassuming way.
