I agree that Calvin would probably go with the filly, but why create the Hobbsian choice in the first place? Rachael Alexander is not in contention for the triple crown. Why not wait for the Belmont? Just my opinion, which doesn't matter since I am not the owner of either horse.

I think one can only train the horse in their barn and not worry about someone else's. Especially after they have just bought her. Would you really worry about putting a rider on the spot in your plan for RA if you had the means to buy her? :D

Asmussen i would think would want one of his other riders to ride RA. If he wanted Calvin i would think him and his agent would go with RA over Mine That Bird.

True, they may put Robby on her and never even give Calvin the choice.

steve and jess aren't dummies. there would be a hell o falot of public backlash if " teh guy that threw the rose in the air on derby day" was taken off of RA.

Bloodhorse is saying:

"Wiggins said he had recently spoken with Jackson’s bloodstock agent John Moynihan, who indicated that if Rachel Alexandra does run in the Preakness, jockey Calvin Borel could take the mount on the filly instead of Mine That Bird, who he piloted to an upset victory in the May 2 Kentucky Derby Presented by Yum! Brands (gr. I).

Wiggins also heard that jockey Mike Smith, who won the Derby aboard longshot Giacomo in 2005, could be the replacement rider for Mine That Bird."

I am sure the trainer will get over it. I would have sold her for 10 million also.

Too bad the new owners don't just leave everything in place that has created the horse RA is. Would love to see Wiggins keep training her.

As for Calvin, I too don't think that the new owners will necessarily keep him on her. Maybe for one race until they get her figured out.

However, and I wish I could find the article or blog that talked about it, but it was commentary on Rachael Alexandra in the paddock before a race and she seemed nervous. Calvin walks up to her, pets her head, she lowers it, and from then on out seems much calmer. I think she and Calvin may have a connection and the new owners would be fools to tinker with that now.

Not me. To have a chance to be the owner of possibly a legendary filly, travel the country and or world knocking down million dollar races and then selling her for nearly that much as a broodmare or keeping her and cashing in on at least her first few foals.

Well, you must be wealthy, anyone who can afford to turn down 10mil, for the possibility of return years from now when we all know how hard it is and how horses find their way to get hurt, colic you name it.
Thats what I ment by "Longshot"

Two words...

Eight Belles...

Maybe the insurance covered the loss, but the price of racing and the risks make it a tough choice.
Run the race - the one that's really worth winning.

I have learned from personal experience-
Take the money....

Everytime I have refused an offer or recommened someone refuse a good offer-because I think the horse will make the money back...
The horse starts turning in clunkers for no good reason, has a career ending injury, or dies....
