Jockey series airs

Postby Mom » Mon May 18, 2009 8:20 am

I noticed that the ratings for the Preakness were way up this year. I think the KD ratings were also up, if I reall correctly. I'm wondering if the popularity of the Jockey's series helped up the exposure for racing or played a role in boosting the race ratings this year - especially w/ Mike Smith riding.

Anyone have any thoughts on this??

Thanks!
Mom

I cant see how it could have hurted any... The show is pretty good unless you follow the sport already, then you already know what each jock is up to, but like me, watch because there are horsies....and that wins...period.

I watched the first showing of season 2 last night, and I enjoyed the hell out of it!

Looking at it from the vantage point of not knowing anything about horses, and racing, this show is not only entertainment, but darn educational! The Kristin Mulhall thing with bullybullybully and fearing he'd get claimed, that was awesome!

Corey and his problem with weight, so forth and so on. The show was really good and is really good for racing.

I fear that the general public sees the racing world as a bunch of mean cowboys/cowgirls that are only interested in Hank Williams music, and we mistreat our horses, and when we are done with them send them to Japan to be burgers or whatever.

This show brings up some real life issues that we feel on the backside of racetracks around the world. I think it's good and I still enjoy it.

Don't forget, it's TV, so it's going to be somewhat sensationalized! You would know that they are talking about Jockeys, and those guys get hurt in the gates and when horses go down too. They don't show any horses that have catastrophic injuries, but those who clip heels, go down, and get back up again. We gotta try and not be sensitive, but still be aware that some people are out to destroy our image, but I don't think the animal planet is.

I enjoyed the first episode too, especially the part about Mulhall and Sutherland sneaking BullyBullyBully out for a workout when it was dark. A little bit of suspense to it, because you think all the while that one trainer was looking at that horse. Look forward to Friday night!

It's not going to keep me from watching it, but it frustrates me just how "unreal" reality TV is.
For example, notice that the horse Sadler claims isn't even running in the same race, although they edit things to make it look like it was. Makes you wonder how many other things get edited to make them appear to be something they aren't.

I don't think that was the point of it. The point was Mulhall and Sutherland were worried about bully getting claimed, and this is what it looks like when a horse gets claimed.

I don't think it was just about that horse. But it's trying to tell a lot in 46 min. intervals.

Trever Denman making the, call for the Dubai World Cup was too weird for me.

Still like the show though.

Edited Part:
I see Trever also calls the races at Aqu!

Yeah, it was awkward to hear Denman "calling" the races from other tracks. Wonder if the next episode shows I Want Revenge getting scratched from the Derby...the highs and the lows of racing.

The show could use better editors. They use the same shots of people cheering for different races. They should not even bother showing it if they can't get shots for the same race.
They also use close up shots of the horses racing that they obviously shoot a reenactment for. There isn't even the same colored horses in the shots half the time.
Trevor Denman calling every race from all over the world is ridiculous too. They only use him recalling races so they can add the jockeys name into the race call which even makes the show more hokey.
The idiot last night saying the vets travel overseas with the horses in flight because horses get put down if they act up on the air plane really took the cake for over sensationalizing. He must have watched that movie International Velvet and really thought they destroy horses for acting up in flight.

It's as close to real as you'll get on tv and the fact it shows what really goes on in the industry in a good light is a plus. I watched it last season and am this season, I love it.

My only complaint with the show is the Trevor Denman voice overs for all the races. But I am sure they are attempting to make this as simple a focus for the watching masses as possible. Otherwise good stories, good information and fun to watch.

I don't like the Trevor Denman voice overs either, but like you stated, it makes it easier for those who don't follow racing.

Yeah, I noticed some of the same rooting for each race, and some of the other complaints, but I LOVE this program! I think it's just awesome for us in the horse business.

I don't think that the general public is naive, but I do think that they don't know nearly as much about the game as we do, and will enjoy the show.

When you think about some of the other horse movies we've seen, with the horses running with mouths wide open to let the "star" of the scene win, etc. People in general they love the story, and watching the horsies go round and round, they don't notice, or I think even care about all of the details that you and I notice and become somewhat irritated by.

This is 100% positive showing of the horse industry, and I wish we'd be able to come up with some stuff like this for trainers owners, and grooms too.

This is a blessing to our industry! After Barbaro, George Washington, and Eight Belles, I think we should embrace this show.

Just my humble opinion.
