Best State (where would you go)

Postby Runnerandrider » Mon Aug 31, 2009 4:51 pm

If you had the option of moving your breeding farm to any state, where would you go? I am asking because in 2 years I will have the option to take my entire program elsewhere, and while seriously considering KY, I am looking at all options. Where would you go (even if it is where you are now) and why? Just interested in hearing some different points of view, since when it comes to finding the right property in the right area, 2 years isn't very long at all :)

PA, NY would be my first choices.

Mountaineers's [WV] WVBRED breeders/owners bonus is 135% of earnings at Mountaineer and there are daily/nightly WVBRED ONLY races.

PA looks good long term.

TEXAS BY GOLLY!! 8)

I would look at weather myself. It's a miserable life at MNR park in the winter time! That cold wind come off that Ohio River!! WHOOOAAAA  I just had a flash back!

The money is great, but frozen water buckets don't excite me anymore!

I say look at the quality of your horses, the quality of the competition, and the room to grow.

That's why I'm staying in Texas. We have decent purses without a slot machine, and eventually we're going to get some form of Alternate gaming to help the purses, plus we're trying stuff in the meantime to help boost our purses.

If you have quality stock, you're facing smaller fields generally, and potentially weaker competition. The big fish little pond theory. Now PLEASE don't get it twisted, these cowboys "ain't no joke!" You gotta be able to train, and you have to have something that can really run. However, land isn't badly priced, and like I said, we're not going to be on the bottom for much longer! Get in NOW while it's cheaper, and easier.

Just my Texas-implanted opinion! :P

I think quite a bit can change in two years. Today's brilliant program might be tomorrow's bust. A lot depends, though, on the quality of your stock.

Just got an email about a result from my trainer at Philly Park - his horse won a $5K claimer and the purse was $23K with an additional 40% for PA breds and if you were the breeder, 30% from the breeders fund for W,P and S. Pretty darn good!

Texas is my suggestion....I'm not a race horse breeder...but one of sport horses...

Land is cheap compared to what you are used to....also we have NO STATE INCOME TAX!!!! SO, more of your winnings stay in your pocket...TONS of people are downsizing and getting OUT of the horse business...FARMS are forsale all over this great state..

GOOD LUCK....IF you decide on the Lone Star State, and are interested in the "North Texas" area...PM me and I can suggest a few names in real estate...

HH :)

Not trying to defend our purses, they are bad, however there are 2 positives with the negative of lower purses.

1. We have more opportunity to race due to lower number of horses.
2. Our overall expenses are less than yours. Trainers, insurance, state income tax, land prices, etc.

I hope that things keep going well in La. But you are aware I hope that when Tx get's slots there will be an immediate depletion of La money.

Every gambling establishment in the state of La. is dependent Texas dollars. I don't think it will be many more years before we have racinos or casinos here, and then you guys are in a desperately depressed fiscal reality.

If a person is going to make the investment of moving to a new state to get involved in this business I would say Texas not because I live here, but because of the things that have been mention, and these things are significant.

Taxes
Land
Field size
Competition
Growth potential
ETC

Let's not forget how big the lil country called Texas is, and how many Lone Star Dollars leave the state EVERYDAY to support you guys in La, Ok, and NM. The bubble that is being ridden in these states is going to burst.

Think about Delta Downs....how much do they handle? Pull out the slot machines, and oppps NO track in Texas is currently in as bad of shape as they will be! That's just 1 of what will be many victims!

The saying is let sleeping dogs lie. Well, we keep getting awakened, and now we are organizing, and we have a goal. We will NOT stay down, and I suggest you consider relocating too, while the gettins good!

I understand that my friend, but it's not an IF, and the question was about relocation. Additionally with the close proximity to most of the tracks in La from many parts of our horse country to drive over there it's no big deal. I can be to Delta in 4 hours, New Orleans or Shrevport in 8hours. So we agree to disagree.
