Would you really pay anything to breed to Nobiz?

C'mon hoss way too harsh on Nobiz. I know alot people don't like the Cormorant line but he did damn good for being in NY, a Derby winner, Champion 3yo Filly and host of other graded winners. Albert the Great ain't much of a sire but thats ok because like in humans sometimes talent skips a generation. Nobiz was always said to be quite nice physically. Biggest thing going against him is Darby Dan and their quest for large books at the expense of quality.

Okay, I'll bite ..... I have a mare in foal to No Biz. Loved him and loved him with my mare. Was I ticked they dropped his fee? Not as much as those folks that saw their mares in foal to stallions whose fees went from $150,000 to $50,000 or from $100,000 to $10,000  Am I sorry I bred to him .... nope!

clh, If you breed back to him you can average down. I think he was a better dirt horse than people realise too, Barclay Tagg had so much success switching up Showing Up that he went and did it with Nobiz too. Good luck....maybe post some pics of your lil Nobiz next year.

What is your definition of a "large book" - 100 mares? Really?

What is an acceptable CI or CPI for stallions in the $5-$10K range?

For Nobiz at 7500 I am willing to bet they weren't very descriminating as who got in his book which I agree is the norm for commercial breeding farms these days. The slight at Darby Dan was mostly directed at what I have seen at the auctions sired by or infoal to Suave and Sun King (150 mares?) where after they go for peanuts you scratch your head and think what were they thinking? In answer to your question really?, yes really.

I thought I read somewhere that Nobiz's CI was pretty high for a stallion in his bracket. So in regards to quality, the numbers don't seem to support that nothing mares were the norm in his book.

Or did I confuse that stat with Sun King? I know one of them had a higher CI than I had expected.

Hey Oliver, I know Nobiz was one heckuva racehorse, and my quick comment could have been delivered more diplomatically. But if I am going to spend $10 or less on a stallion these days, I am going with proven stallions or unproven horses by fashionable sires. Unless you get an outstanding individual your chances of breaking even (forget making a profit) are slim and none with an unproven, inexpensive horse by an unfashionable and failed stallion (Albert).

Now if you are considering an unproven horse by a fashionable sire, you have a chance....

Hey da hossman, I have a question for you - would you say the same applies to a broodmare? In other words, if I have a mare by a proven, fashionable sire but her page is weak, is she worth taking a chance on in the breeding shed rather than a broodmare who has a good page, but is by an unproven, unfashionable sire?

Well, Magna Graduate was certainly a nice racehorse and I like durability. I'd be interested to see what others have to say about him re. female family and conformation. Just from my viewpoint looking at his race record and page and comparing with a couple of other new sires he might be a tad overpriced.
