In europe the number of breakdowns per 1000 starts are below 0 .6
We need to look into our enormous use of DRUGS on the horses. If we went to no drugs like in Europe, how would all these trainers make it ??

Maybe the grand jury can get to the bottom of this and throw all the complacents out with Gill. Better yet throw them all in the same jail cell.
if they have the evidence.....throw the book at him.

No matter what.. I hate PETA and all the morons behind it, but I really laugh at an organization that is so moved on educating members being supported by such idiots.
I did have to share their take on MG.
One person said something 1/2 intelligent.. "There are so many Mike Gills out there" .. which is true.

Remember, they took the evidence with them when they amputated the leg.
"When I am on my deathbed, I imagine I will say, 'Thank God I did that'" - Arthur Hancock, on buying back Gato del Sol from Europe after Exceller was killed in a slaughterhouse in Sweden.

i just wonder whats the deal with the leg ? ....did they cut nerves to block the horse ...which is dispicible....did not authoritys confiscate the leg ?like i said there's smoke. but i want proof.....there was a man just found innocent of rape that did time {20yrs}from my area........DNA proved him innocent.....you need proof beyond a doubt....not knee jerk reactions......do i "think" he's guilty....hell yes ! but due process is needed.for sure he is a shrewed bastard....cant hang him for that.
lets just hope they get him and have the goods on him.

Each horse with blocked nerves is an potential danger on the training track and on the course, because they misses the acurate feeling where and how to put their feets on the ground.
They go down without giving a warning sign for any danger to occur and therefore they are some kind like a kiss of death
So hang them all who are doiing this kind of things.

hi reenci...hi zinn21
Maybe so, but the quote below (credited to PETA pres Ingrid Newkirk) from the TB Times article, suggests (to me anyway) that maybe there was a message behind her message? After all...Ms Newkirk had the opportunity but didn't launch an attack, much less a vicious attack, on horseracing in general.
You may disagree... but (from my perspective) her comments (in the TB-Times anyway) didn't seem particularly aggressive or provocative...All Things Considered.
Read on below.
Is it possible that PETA is becoming more responsible/reasonable/measured when it comes to thoroughbred horseracing?
Think about it...isn't PETA best known for attacking and spewing venom when it can seize an opportunity to do so; like it did (for example) after Eight Belles broke down. Here's another opportunity to attack, yet PETA's president offered what seemed (to me anyway) to be a rather measured response. A response/comment that clearly (to my way of thinking) implies/acknowledges (whether or not that was the intent) that healthy sound horses do suffer catastrophic breakdowns, and PETA is willing to accept breakdowns of healthy, sound racehorses If/When they believe the frequency is reasonable/normal.
If that's the case...who determines who's sound/healthy etc etc, and what percentage of breakdowns or frequency is acceptable?
Respectfully

PETA pres Ingrid Newkirk is quoted as saying and TB Times wrote:“Healthy, sound horses don’t suffer catastrophic breakdowns this frequently,” said Ingrid Newkirk, PETA’s president. “The state veterinary board needs to ask the veterinarians who are treating Gill’s horses some tough questions.”

The breaakdown rate in hong kong is bdw 0.24 breakdowns per 1000 starts
OKAY ..... so let's toss Gill to the side for a moment.... Why in your opinion (anyone who cares to give input) are our breakdown rates so much higher over here? What are they doing in Hong Kong that we obviously aren't or are doing??? So is one to assume if the breakdown rate is lower perhaps the class of animal is not as high as American? What is the average starts for Europe,Hong Kong and the like?
My answer and I am only right in my mind is Pharmaceutical Abuse. But I welcome other points of view for educational means.
trying to come up with something brillant..... this may take a while.
