Postby TJ » Fri Jul 02, 2010 8:07 am

Great story about a McLaughlin maiden named Remark, who is a rare brindle Thoroughbred. TJ

Thanks so much for posting, TJ. With Remark's coloration, pedigree, and solid races thus far, she's sure interesting. And she was SO close to a win last-out....she started in the 8 hole, took the lead entering the stretch, fought back after she was passed, and just missed the win.

Nope, I will have to get you a few pictures of Smart Little Habit. He is a bay with brindling all along his rib cage. He won 3 or 4 here in NM. He is my assistant's pony horse now. Finished running a few years ago.

There is another equine, a mare….will find her name and post it. But don’t miss to follow carefully the aforementioned threads.

Hi Photo,
I'm sure Barbara Livingston would appreciate knowing this as well. She has an interest in recording all brindles on her website....especially since she thought Remark was the only TB brindle to race. She could be contacted via her website which StayOutFront has posted. TJ

Hi StayOutFront,
Thanks for posting Barbara Livinston's website......Slewcy's Gale was very interesting as well as the additional pictures of Remark, especially the one of her prancing coming back from her last race (picture is below). TJ

Hi Jorge,
Very interesting, Catch a Bird had to be a very rare brindle. TJ

Hi Jorge,
Yes, she was documented by Barbara Livingston, she is in the DRF article. The picture below is from B. Livingston's website. TJ

As the article says, "Odds are good there have been others, horses whose patterns went undocumented or whose markings were dismissed as something else."

Bally K and Igotembaby are possibilities, but there are no photos - just someone's word that they were striped. Same for Lauren's Tizzy (someone who worked with her didn't remember her having stripes, though). And there's a Tiznow out there whose said to have some, but there aren't any photos of him. (hope to find some)

They just need to be confirmed somewhere - like in the Keeneland Library's 'color' archives (they save articles of horses of odd colors), or in findable stories (we searched old DRFs, Blood-Horses, NY Times, the Brooklyn Eagle [a very old newspaper], and we couldn't find any stories throughout history), via the brindle horse site, etc.

Jorge has also started a thread or two here asking if anyone knows of brindles, as have people on a few other websites in past years - with no one mentioning any.

I'd LOVE proof of others...so yep, I'd love to see photos of Smart Little Habit - thanks (I'll PM you my e-mail address) :). Are the stripes on one side or both?

Some day - many, many years from now, I'd love to do an expanded photo piece chronicling these brindle horses. They are fascinating.

I already mentioned about the alleged existence of another “brindle” Thoroughbred on the following thread:

http://www.pedigreequery.com/forum/view ... ow+brindle

but this is only known through “hearsay” evidence, which cannot be confirmed.

But anyway, here is the name of the case:

LAURENS TIZZY http://www.pedigreequery.com/laurens+tizzy

Jorge,

I've been trying to confirm those Tiznow cases, but haven't had luck with either. One of those horses was supposed to be in a sale last month, but it wasn't entered.

In Lauren's Tizzy's case, someone who worked with her didn't remember any brindle markings - but, that being said, it doesn't mean she doesn't have them. The only photos I ever saw of her didn't show stripes, but the stripes don't always show up clearly in photos.

On my next KY trip, I hope to track down the person who has her now, just to double-check.

Well, after looking at the pictures, it looks like what I thought was brindle striping on Smart Little Habit's sides is something called "rabicano" striping. I stand corrected. I look for runners, not color, so I was uneducated on the nuances! Sorry!

Thanks SO much for checking, photofinish! Actually, rabicanos are quite rare (and very interesting) too. I never looked for color (definitions, at least), so this stuff's all new to me, too.

Thanks again, though. If I'm ever out that way, I'd love to see Smart Little Habit - sounds like a very unusual horse.
