"I never even heard of him / her!"

Postby Toccet02 » Thu Mar 17, 2011 12:02 pm

As much as I try to keep up with thoroughbred racing breeding and study pedigrees, there are still times when I'll see an ancestor I've never seen (or at least noticed) before. Case in point: Beggar Boy, a 1924 black son of Black Toney.
My ? is, for you experts out there, are there still times when this happens to you? Or have you pretty much seen the mosaic of the whole breed a time or two?

Memory serves me:
He was at one point at the BLack Gold Ranch in Ok.
There was something to do with oil back then. He is a brother to Black Gold the winner of the 50th Ky Derby

I also believe that he has some influence on racing quarterhorses.
Black Gold was sterile.

Well, essentially sterile. He managed one foal which died tragically when it was struck by lightning. He then went back to the race track at which point he broke down. The dam of Black Gold and Beggar Boy, Useeit, had an interesting story from what I remember. Her owner Al Hoots entered her in a race agreeing with everybody that they wouldn't claim her. I guess the equivalent of an unofficial optional claimer. Somebody did it anyway. She and Hoots were banned from racing, but he had a dying wish/dream about breeding her to a top stallion and getting the Derby winner.

I assume since she died in 1924 and that's the year Beggar Boy was foaled that she died from foaling complications. Obviously that's just an educated guess.

Beggar Boy was quite influential in the early QH breed, especially in Oklahoma. He was acquired by Ronald S. Mason, a well known Oklahoma QH breeder back in the 1930s-1940s, who used him on his daughters of his great foundation sire, Oklahoma Star. BB might have been a US Remount stallion.

OK . . . but the thread was about pedigree names that were totally unfamiliar. Anybody?

Having an historical bent and being "into" QHs long before I became interested in TBs, I'm probably much more familiar with obscure TBs from the past than many people who are primarily interested in current TBs. A great many obscure TBs had significant influence on the QH breed: King Plaudit, Beggar Boy, Three Bars, Depth Charge, Top Deck, Rocket Bar, Azure Te, Beduino, etc.

I don't know that that makes me an "expert". It's just part of a lot of esoteric knowledge I've acquired over the years.

Interesting...those are all familiar to me except Azure te!

I've owned several Beggar Boy mares as well as an original first 10 AQHA Stud Books that I bought from the Masons. Beggar Boy was well known as a QH sire especially crossed on Oklahoma Star and Bert mares they could run some but excelled as ranch and performance horses.

Toccet Im afraid that I don't understand your request. Isn't this information about BB what you are looking for?

Thanks . . yes, that's what I'm interested in.
For that matter, I still am surprised at Derby contenders showing up that I've never heard of.

There may be a photo of Begger Boy over on the TVG.com website. Take a look under discussions, then History & Photos, and it is under the thread on Black Gold.
