An all white horse with only the hat would be called a "war bonnet".
I'm glad you posted this bit of info. I recently purchased "Rubiana Lace" who I has what I have been calling a medicine hat. I'll be sure to use the correct term now!

The simplified version is Dominant whites arise from either a dominant white parent (not present here) or as a mutation to KIT which means this little guy is the first of his line. So if he goes to stud he should produce 1/2 DW foals and 1/2 non DW foals. Of course we know that DW has a variety of expressions. Some lines produce the whole range, some just a part of it and some almost all whites. They are working on why.
Wasn't the other white foal produced the same year as Opera stage (whatshername?) born in SAf? Or was it NZ?

How curious the fact that if you search through the internet for the term
"medicine hat" there is no clear reference to any kind of hat or cap for the head like the term suggests when applied to equines. To the ordinary person the term seems to suggest some kind of bonnet where the ears are protected. Am I wrong or missing some key information?
