Paynter Sick Again

Postby TJ » Tue Aug 28, 2012 12:02 pm

Paynter spiked a fever yet again and was sent to Upstate Equine Medical Center in Schuylerville, under the advice of Dr. Mark Cheney. TJ

Scary to hear about how even if he makes it through the colitis, laminitis could get him. Such an insidious disease.

I wished Ahmed Zayat well on Twitter. He was RTing everybody's thoughts and prayers. Poor guy can't catch a break. Apparently Paynter hasn't improved but he's stable. I guess that's better than nothing. I saw the fatality rate on colitis X and my heart just sunk. Sounds like best case scenario, he's got a 1 in 4 chance of making it. His treatment was pretty aggressive and immediate, I assume. I heard prior antibiotic treatment can feed into getting colitis X. Maybe the treatment for the last problem led to this complication or maybe he was already dealing with it in the first place.

It'd be a terrible shame to lose Paynter. I hope he gets better. Seattle Slew raced to great success at 4 after surviving it. Clearly a full recovery can happen. Fingers crossed. I just realized he's got a 2yo full brother so I put him in my DRF watch.

Tulloch ,one of Australia's all time greats survived similar to return to the track. Fortunately he was in the hands of Dr Percy Sykes , a genius. I heard that at one stage they tubed him with a liquid strained through cloth consisting of cow manure and tea leaves to get his gut flora going again.

i think something is cooking in the baffert barn. your two best horses get mysteriously ill a few months after the triple crown races with no plasuable explanation of what happened to either. just that they are both sick and they can't get better.

i also find in particular the time of paynters sickness to be off putting.. right around the time when bode was known to not be coming back for a while and paynter was looking like he could take over the 3YO crown

either it's the coincidences of all coincidences, or something seriously is not adding up.

and i'm quite sure i am about tog et a barrage of people here telling me i don't know what i am talking about and i'm quite sure they are right. but that's what i think. this situation is not adding up. Colitis sounds like somehting that could be triggered froma reaction to given something his body is not taking to.

Godolphin's Tempera died of colitis in 2002. Interesting to note, so did stallion Mozart of the same connections, I believe the same year.

Bodemeister was a shoulder injury.

Paynter is doing better. The fact he's still here after the initial attack Sunday night is a good sign. Colitis can lead to death within 24-48 hours.....I think the longer he hangs in there the better his chances to survive. TJ

As of Monday new complications have set in....an infection developed at the site where a catheter was inserted so Paynter could get his meds and other necessary supplements....blood clotting is also developing. Article indicates Zayat may be faced with a tough decision? TJ

Is colitis common in just TB's? Why is laminitis a side effect?

The tone of the tweets is very foreboding; definitely preparing the fans for the worst. I'm glad though, that there is no intention to have Paynter continue on if he gets to the point where he's suffering and they can't manage the pain.

Very upsetting nevertheless. :(

What a shame. And Baffert has one of the premiere caretaking operations in the country.

Paynter had a better day today....he was brighter and his appetite improved. This is the hardest part of this colitis that leads to laminitis, all the ups and the downs. Hope one day and worry the next.....sometimes changing every hour. One thing is for sure Paynter isn't ready to give up and his owners are willing to go the extra mile for him. TJ

I got really excited when I heard he had a normal bowel movement today. I feel a little weird about obsessing about Paynter's poops, but when it makes the Zayats feel better, well it makes me feel better too. ;)
